Diesel Dawg or Hyperdrive?

Sign in to disble this ad
I've decided to get a new distortion pedal. I'm stuck between the Gallien-Krueger Diesel Dawg and the Ashdown James Lomenzo Hyperdrive. I know that the Hyperdrive isn't available in the US yet, but Ashdown told me it'd be out in July. I currently use the American Big Muff, but it takes away to much low end. It also doesn't have much tonal range.

I want my next distortion to be able to go to a really light overdrive to an insane fuzz without losing low end. Anybody have any experience with either pedal?

In case you need to know I use a Gallien-Krueger 1001RB-II and a 410RBX.

Thanks in advance.

With that requirement, the Diesel Dawg is not your pedal.

Considering that there aren't all that many posts about either individually, I don't think you are going to find too many people who have experience with both. I've never tried either, though I've tested out a GK2001 whose distortion circuit I believe the Diesel Dawg is based on. I thought it sounded pretty good. It wasn't exactly what I want in terms of dirt, but very solid.

But not only will it not go from light overdrive to all out fuzz, I have yet to see a pedal that actually could. Most pedals that make such claims usually can't do either well, let alone both.

As the owner of a 2001RB... the Diesel Dawg is not going to do fuzz. It'll do a really heavy, thick distortion if you want, but it doesn't sound like fuzz, IMHO.

However, it'll sound great with your GK rig, and it'll cut through a metal mix.

Keep dreaming. The only pedal that I know of that can do that is the Pigtronix Disnortion, and that's only because it has a fuzz and an overdrive as separate circuits within it. As TheBigO said, despite claims by the manufacturers, most pedals are not able to cover the whole spectrum well. Especially with the low end, many of the pedals that try to cover the whole dirt spectrum are not able to keep the lows at all settings, tending to lose lows the higher you crank the dirt.

You're better off getting a separate OD and fuzz.
