differences in tonality between big muff and big muff (bass specific) on bass

Sign in to disble this ad
Is there any tonal difference between using the normal white Big Muff on a bass as opposed to the new bass specific version? Many of the bassists I know who use this pedal use the guitar version but obviously considering the newer one is made specifically for bass I was just curious. I figured they're essentially the same thing, but I felt like I should ask before just going in and buying.

to hear the distortion tone I'm looking for look here

I have the regular NYC Big Muff Pi. I really like the sound of the pedal when sustain is pumped and tone is rolled back far (this is the typical Big Muff sound) but you lose a lot of clarity, notes played too close together become almost indescernable and its better for use in droning out notes rather than playing at any high speed. But you can turn the sustain back some and the tone up some (just not too much or you get low end loss) to get a useable tone. I have never tried the Bass Big Muff though so I have no idea about that.

that sounds more like a super fuzz or something along those lines with maybe a booster in front

Tonally, they are two different beasts. You have more bass, a blend, and lower gain w/ the BBM than the NYC Reissue (which is silver/metal).

I thought the Bass Big Muff was somewhat less lively sounding than the Little Big Muff or my current BYOC Big Muff clone. However, it does retain more low end for more of the tone knob's sweep, it also has the bass boost and blend (50/50) modes. The BYOC is the best of the 3 IMO.

One of my friends uses the big muff that was originally for the guitar. His power adaptor was broken so he didnt bring it to a gig we both played. I let him use my bass big muff and after the gig he said he was going home to order one of them! That about explains the difference on bass

the main hook of the bass version is that you can blend the fuzz into the dry sound so you don't lose low end.

bass version basically gives u 3 types of bass muff, guitar muff is just 1. however, the bass muff does not replicate the guitar muff. BBM is great if your trying to decide, you'll get something good, but I doubt it will be your holy grail fuzz.
