Different compressor settings on different basses

Sign in to disble this ad
I was trying to perfect my settings on my BBE Opto Stomp for both my basses (SX J Bass, Squier P Bass), and after awhile I realized I couldn't find a setting I liked a lot for both. When the J sounded great, the P sounded hot and squashed/pumping. When the P sounded great, the J was quiet and too close to the dry tone. Part of this was that the P has slightly hotter pickups than the J, but also, the innate characteristics of each bass. I decided to change comp settings for each bass to make the levels closer and to have the perfect amount of compression. These are the settings I liked the best:

J: Volume at 3 o'clock and Compression at 1 o'clock

P: Volume at 2 o'clock and Compression at 12 o'clock

Sorry for the rant, but does anyone else do this?

Yes, except on basses that have identical electronics.

Yup... I was thinking about getting a TC Nova Dynamics because of this- two very different basses and pickups.
