Thumbs up Digitech Bad Monkey

I just gotta say. I reeeeeally love this little pedal.

I know it garnishes a fair amount of praise on here, but it really is a phenomenal pedal for it's price. I just got home from band practice. Usually, because i'm lazy, i just take my 1x12 Gibson B40 combo amp. However, it's old and isn't in the best quality, sound wise. Now, i usually use my Bad Monkey on a harsher setting and with a different band, but tonight i had left it in my gear bag by accident and had it with me at practice. As an experiment, I turned the gain to about 8, Lows to about 2, and Highs to about 10. I then used the volume as needed, but man... my sound quality tonight was AWESOME.

This is a power-pop band, and i play clean 100% of the time, so i've never even thought to bring any of my pedals. My drummer freaks out whenever he sees any sort of pedal in my vicinity except the boss tuner .

Anyways. Just wanted to give a rad lil pedal a shout out and remind myself (and possibly others) that effect pedals can shine in awesome ways in very subtle settings!!

The whole "less is more" thing is kinda our domain, and that can certainly be extended to how we incorporate effects pedals.

Yeah i have a hard time remembering that. ESPECIALLY with dirt pedals...

Usually with modulation i'm good with the "less is more" idea, but for some reason i always feel like i need to crank dirt pedals to get anything out of them.

I agree - great pedal for a very reasonable price.

I pretty much only use mine at low gain settings. It does a great job of warming up my tone and giving it just a little break-up. Also sounds great running into my BBM

I got my bad monkey as a very budget (got it for $30!) way of giving myself a tube preamp sound, something that I could distort by aggressive playing, but normal playing would just be warm and a little bit of breakup.

I have to say for the price it really sounds great. The next step from this is a pedal with an actual tube for me, I'm going to see if I can get ahold of a DHA VT1-Bass Std. Then I can use that for the light preamp breakup and the monkey for full-out ROAR.

Can someone find some sound clips of this. I've heard nothing but good things, but all the clips on TB are either broken or deleted.

Many Thanks

I have had a Bad Monkey for a while. It sounds amazing at high or low gain.

The only flaw i have is the buffer. i have placed it all over my chain, and the buffer in it just messes stuff up. I cant seem to have it anywhere. I even tried it in a true bypass loop. it sounded fine when played alone, but when another pedal was engaged while it was, i got a horrible change in sound.

If you only use it its great, but someone needs to figure out a mod to adjust that stupid buffer.

A have a side note about low gain distortion too. I like Black Rebel Motorcycle Club. Robert Levon Been uses many dirt pedals at low gain to get an amazing sound. I have sat and played with my pedals till if figured it out too. Three low gain overdrives make one bad fuzz/distortion sound.

I have a BM (unmodded) up for sale. Just bought another bass recently & need to sell a couple of odds-n-ends. I WILL be buying another BM in a month or two. I have other overdrive pedals, but the BM is unique sounding enough & awesome enough to always have one around in addition to what I already have. Anyway, hope the clips help.

Sound clips: FS: Digitech Bad Monkey

Awesome clips stingray69!
I've just recieved this pedal in the mail today and it is indeed awesome. Even though your clips has been recorded without an amp, they certainly do the BM justice. The Bad Monkey sounds wicked even without Huphreys mod, and the fact that it responds so well to picking dynamics makes extremely versatile.

Thank You - one of the hardest tones to record accurately without mic'ing a cab is overdrive, IMO. Overdrive tones just sound so much better through a cab than straight to pc. But the Bad Monkey records really well straight to computer, IMO.

The first to arrive in my herd of pedals, several years ago. "You can have my bad monkey when you pry it from my cold..."

I don't have anything of the BM soloed, but if you check out my band's myspace, you can hear the Bad Monkey in action. Go to www.myspace.com/calvaryrock and listen to "Run Kid Run" for the best example of it.

I have two versions of the BM. A modded version made in China and a straight made in USA version.

The modded version is pretty nice but the MIA just sounds that much better.

I picked up one of these today (I was actually looking for one, and happened to get lucky at music go round), so far I am super impressed! Really nice tubey sounds. Most people seem to prefer the modded version(s) but I'm totally satisfied with the sound it has now. I'm a fan!

Forgot to mention that this is great for tubey grind with a precision. For some reason the blended sounds of my m-80 just sounded a bit flat with the precision, and this nailed the tone i was looking for.
