My review of the Digitech Bass Synth:

Meh.

Haven't used the others.

The Digitech does sound cool, don't get me wrong. I just find it a bit hard to control at times, and the sound seems a bit... "cold." For lack of better term.

I have one in my chain, but I'm constantly fighting it to make it sound right.

I don't know if I'd rightly compare a BSW to a Bassballs.
Bassballs is auto-wah. That's IT.

No it's not.

But your general point is right - they're TOO different to compare. They're not even in the same class of effects, despite what few similarities they might have.

I really like my micro Q-tron. I got that after trying both the bass balls and q-tron. Takes a bit of playing with the settings to get the right sound but it sounds pretty good. I didn't like the fuzz/overdrive part of the bass balls.

I just played with my Digitech BSW...

I retract my last statement. It did well this time. Cool synth distortions and decent envelope filter... especially with the sub...

I have the digitech and a micro q-tron. I'd go with the Q if you want a quality envelope effect.

Ok. I currently use four filters, Pigtronix EP-1, Menatone Mail Bomb, Micro Qtron, and Bassballs. Of these, only the EP-1 would make me cry if I lost it.

Well, if you lose your EP-1, the EHX Stereo Polyphase will be around to comfort you and make you forget your old phaser.

None of these options are particularly good IMO. I HATE the BSW for various reasons -- the short of it being the envelope was weak, the synths sounded hilarious and the octaver (while good tracking) had a tone I disliked. The Bassballs never really did anything for me. All of the Micro Q-trons I've tried malfunctioned in some way or another, most required the drive knob to be very high before getting a decent envelope, then giving a huge volume boost when it finally did kick in.

Get an old (1st-3rd gen) DOD FX25. They are amazing.

i like the bassballs but it annoys me a lot... i have to set it so precisely to get a decent sound .... the sound i can get out of it is awesome but the slightest knob movement will make it suck for the way i use it.. i have it set reallly burpy and aggressive... not funky at all but it works great with my biamped fuzz! you might find other, more funky settings that work for you.. i do want to replace my big old russian ( bent knob and bent switch!) with a new nano bassballs.

That was my favorite part. I kept wishing I could set the BB's Q to a specific point, and use it as a kickin' fuzz.

+1 to the people recommending the Micro Q-Tron for a good inexpensive envelope filter. I had a Mini Q-Tron, which is basically the same thing, but in a casing twice the size. I have never understood the unending praise heaped upon the BSW. I thought it sounded corny when I've played it. I think the Bassballs sounds AWEsome, but its a very unique filter. Definitely not a "standard" filter

ive had both and they both suck - just save for the new q-tron+ or the EHX bass micro synth, you wont be dissappointed there

these have helped me get my mind off the BSW cause it seems its not really gonna be any good in the band scenario. i am rather now thinking about a phasor; EHX nano small stone
