Digitech Whammy Footswitch Mod

Sign in to disble this ad
Hey,

Im getting a Digitech Whammy IV soon and I was going to get it new and modded by Molten Voltage which would cost me around AU$300 including shipping.

I was thinking that seeing as I can get a new unmodded Whammy IV off US eBay stores for only AU$200, why not try the mod myself?

Problem is that I've never modded a pedal before and wouldnt have a clue where to start!

So, the mod is a jack which lets you plug in a footswitch and change between the modes on the Whammy. You can find the mod im talking about here: http://www.moltenvoltage.com/whammy_mods.html

So, has anyone ever done this mod or know how to?

Cheers,

Tom

To be honest I'd get molten voltage to do it, I imagine it's a pretty tricky mod and it'll involve rewiring the PCB, and if you've never modded a pedal before you'll almost definitely screw it up, in which case you're left with a very expensive expression controlled paper weight

Yeah, this isn't just a matter of adding a jack and some wires, I would guess it involves a decade counter IC and some logic. While it's possible to DIY, you would be in for some homework and as the above poster says you do run the risk of ruining your Whammy. If it's a matter of not wanting to pay shipping from the US, I'd bet there's a qualified person in Aus who could do the work, but their work probably won't be any cheaper than MV's.

If you just want to change the settings without having to kneel down and do it, some guy was selling "whammy wheels" on ebay a while back. Basically a plastic disk that fits over the knob so you can turn it with your foot, i was considering getting one but I sold my wh-4

Yeh i had a feeling it wasnt just gonna be a jack and some wires. Maybe ill just leave the mod. If i find myself changing the settings onstage alot (which seeing that i only play in church wont be a lot) ill get it. Theres a cool wheel thing u an get from ebay which allows you to turn the knob with your foot. Only $10. I reckon ill get that and put the money towards some george ls cables

The Whammy is one of the more fragile/difficult pedals to mod. Not really a first time DIY project.
