Digitech whammy IV bypass quality?

Sign in to disble this ad
Searches for both whammy and bypass turned up tons of results but nothing regarding the quality of the whammy's bypass.

Is tone suck an issue with these units? Also, where is the best spot in a signal chain for a whammy?

Thanks in advance.

The ideal spot for any pitch tracking unit (octaver, harmonizer, tuner, etc) is generally first in the chain. However, this is not necessarily the best spot in the chain as that is a matter of personal taste.

As for the bypass, it's buffered. If that bothers you, talk to Molten Voltage. They do super awesome mods to Whammys including (but certainly not limited to) true-bypass.

I see, thanks for the tip

Buffered bypass doesn't bother me as long as it's decent, which brings us back to the original question; when bypassed is there a noticable difference in tone?

I've only spent limited time with one, and never in a true-bypass loop. Hopefully one of the numerous people who own or have owned one of these can field that question.

I recently picked up the Whammy 4... always wanted to try one and they released the 20th Anniversary edition, so I had to bite (stupid G.A.S. ).

Anyway, I was pretty worried about the bypass as well. I tested it through headphones, my small rig (Hartke Kickback 12) and my larger rig (Shuttle 6.0 into Avatar B210 & B212 neos). I'm pretty anal about noise through my rig and my tone, I'm fine with the bypass on the Whammy IV. I've thought about getting a Micro Loooper, but the bypass hasn't bothered me enough.
