Dilemma: Green Rhino or Pork Loin -which is dirtier and grittier?)

Sign in to disble this ad
I can't make up my mind, and I can't test both for at least 2 more weeks until Green Rhino arrives here in the local shop.

I want an overdrive pedal that has grit and cuts through.
Something close to Timmy C's tone in "Know Your Enemy" when he kicks the drive after Morello's solo.
And something I might kick in during guitarist solo.
I don't want a pedal for an "always on" thing because I'm satisfied with my GK 700RB II tone as is.

So far, Green Rhino looks to be more like it, while Pork Loin seems to be more of a warmer, tubish light OD. Am I right?
Is Green Rhino more gritty and growly than Pork Loin?
I'm just worried if I use PL as an OD, the OD would be rather buried in the mix and not really noticed.

Does Rhino bring more dirt than Porky?

You are right. I got a PL first because of people here loving it, it never made my band board because it was too smooth...like porridge... then someone mentioned that GR actually has a 100hz knob so it might be bass friendly, turns out it's super, Much more interesting sounding overdrive with lots of upper mids too. (it replaced an Xotic BB bass pre that became boring) Although I'm keeping it, GR was only on my board for 2 weeks...I got a zvex Distortron. Best overdrive so far.

Distortron huh? Can't find any good threads or info about using it with bass.
But you have me interested now!
Do you lose the low end with it? You should do clips!

It's like the zvex Mastrotron, the vexter series. It has a 3 way bass response switch, position 3 is a small bass boost, which seems a slightly lower freq. than GR's 100hz. 2 overdrive settings, light and heavy, I use light with overdrive knob around noon, high knob at about 3pm for a slight cut. For what I use it for, driving other effects (fuzz and various envelopes) so max midrange happens, it's superior to GR, but GR might be better as a stand alone overdrive. Envelopes love the distortron. GR is a little abrasive into envelopes.

If you want warmth, Pork Loin. If not, go for the other one.
