Direct question to submarine owners

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi,

I would like to ask a question about submarine and your input is extremely important to determine the cause of a rare humming noise (2 actually in almost 1 year since the SUBmarine was introduced).

Do you experience a humming noise when you use a power supply with the submarine? I have two power supplies to try, one of them is my bench power supply and the other one is my pedalboard power supply. In that cases, submarine works silently as it should work.

I kindly ask for your experiences with it if you have a problem with a loud humming noise, when you use it with your regulated power supplies. Any input is valuable to us and thanks in advance for your time.

Best Regards,
Os

Hey Os, I had to try several solutions to get the Subamarine to work out on my board. With the battery it was perfect, but I hate batteries. I started out with a 1spot but there were issues with noise from other (older EHX) pedals, but the Submarine was fine. I went to an older solution Boss PSA 120 and PSM-5 but there was a pulsing sound (acceptable live but not in the studio) with the Submarine that turned into a horrible noise when the distortion was switched on. I then tried a Boss PSA-120T with the PSM-5 and all is well.

Thanks for the input

By the way, I listened your CD and I must say I DIG some of the tracks. Especially like the first one and the europan kings songs. I find your original songs refreshing in terms of composition and instrument usage. Keep up the good work!! Being a one man band is not easy I know that. So it makes the recording more special!

Actually, I find a solution to the case. Submarine doesn't work good without regulated power supplies. Frankly, I do find it surprising that people know things enough to purchase a preamp, but not a regulated power supply for their pedal boards

Addition to that, some transformer based power supplies (eventhough they are regulated )failed to filter the AC voltage feed into the circuit. I simply added a AC filter before the most positive voltage and the problem was solved.

I generally build my stuff (except for the boss pedals, they are cheap enough and comlex enough not go into the trouble). With my power supplies, 1-spot and my bench power supply, there seems to be no problem with the noise.

Hey, Os. I've been using the Submarine for a while now. I'm actually the 1st owner, Norman, whose description is on your ebay page and I've been powering it with a 1 spot the whole time and have had no noise issues at all. I'm looking forward to purchasing your Bi 200 Red Truck preamp for a passive Warwick bass soon as well as checking out your MessDrive. If they're of the same caliber as your Submarine, then I have nothing to worry about Great stuff, Os. Thanks again.

Oh..

Ofcourse I remember. That day was crazy actually.

Back than, I designed myself a preamp and liked it. Then I said to myself: "hey, why not put it on eBay?" That stuff was sold to David Miller. I intentionally called it stuff, because it was barely a preamp. He tried it and wrote about 2 pages long bad review about it and wanted to return it.

First I was very upset, but then I e-mailed him and promised a good bass preamp. He patiently waited about 6 weeks and that was how submarine was born.

Then I put it the submarine on eBay. About an hour later, it was sold to Templar (also a TalkBass member). I relist it and again one hour later you bought it. I hadn't even drilled the enclosures yet. I sent an e-mail to you and him, he wanted the refund and you wanted to wait 3 days. That's how you got the first submarine offered.

It's really good to hear your voice. It gave me the strength to continue building todays orders, even it is 5 amm here.

Yes I have tracked you down finally

Yeah, I get better results with a nuclear engine than those standard diesel/electric combos... don't have to resurface for air every so often to charge the batteries, too.

(old, I know!)
