Dissatisfied with BMS > Big Muff, looking for more epic metal distortion

Sign in to disble this ad
Currently for my metal-style distortion I use my Washburn T24 to an EHX Bass MicroSynth, which goes to an EHX Bass Big Muff Pi. I turn up the octave and square wave on the BMS and it sounds okay through the Big Muff, but I'm not satisfied. I don't know what it is about the tone that bothers me, but all I know is that it doesn't record well and I don't quite like it.

I want to achieve the sound that metal guitarists like the ones of Parkway Drive or As I Lay Dying on my bass. Has anyone tried this, and if so, what effects do/did you use?

Check out Creepyfingers effects. Brad Davis makes top notch stuff and plays in the famous band Fu Manchu. He knows his stuff. He will work with you to get you something exactly right for you.

The square of the BMS does take a little "something" from your tone. I used to compensate by adding in more suboctave in.
I don't think the BMS and muff is what you want for the g****r sound. Perhaps a Boss ds-1 or rat!

I can't seem to find any sort of availability for the pedals or many examples of how they sound.

There are many boss ds-1 and rat clips on YouTube.
Creepy Fingers can be found via a google search: http://www.google.com/m/url?client=s...JP7Rd6OejwuABw

I'm not trying to sell you my pedals on here, but you can use my rat tail audio clips on my site (link in sig) as a reference for what a rat can sound like. Note that these are direct-lined with no eq shaping.

How much will the Rat Tail cost, and when will it be released? It sounds absolutely brilliant. I just hope it isn't out of my price range.

That sounds pretty reasonable, actually. If I were to somehow sell my BMS and BBM∏ at full price, I'd have $360 to spend, -$155 is $205, which is more than enough for the $160 Boss SYB-5 I wanted, leaving me $45 in leeway when selling my effects. AWESOME

I would keep the BMS over the SYB!

Well, the thing is that I don't really do much Moog-style stuff. There aren't many settings on it that I like, and with the fast drummer I have in my band, the drum&bass synth sound that the SYB-5 can get with an expression pedal is highly desirable, as are its more-practical settings. I can't think of a situation in which I'd use a high-to-low frequency sweep with a tinny distortion.

What are you using for an amp? While i could imagine your tone could end up scooped, with the right amp and eq it could work.

I use an Acoustic 260 Mini Stack. It's about 30 inches tall with a 10 or 12 inch speaker. It sounds wonderful on clean settings and with my Dunlop wah.

Your amp/speakers prob can't fully handle what you're throwing at it . Your experience may change on a larger, more powerful setup.
The scoop you experience is the loss of certain freqs with the BMS and the mid scoop on the muff.

A single 10 or 12 is going to have a hard time competing with guitars and sounding as huge as you'd like.

More watts. More speakers. That's the short answer. Consider the thousands of posts in the "amps" forum the long answer.

Sometimes cheapest is not the best option. I would suggest saving up a bit more for something that you'll be able to use in many situations for the next year or two.
It hurts to upgrade your equipment to find that you need to upgrade again and lose more money in the process. Thoughts?

Agreed. I'm only fourteen, though, so I have no way of earning money.
