Tech21 XXL bass will get pretty wild before it starts hissing too much...

If you're really struggling with noise, I find combining two distortions, both with lower gains, does a lot to reduce hiss/hum.

The Aguilar Agro is very quiet even at it's highest gain settings (which is how I run it, and it's pretty friggin' high gain). It's perfect in the way it is not noisy or hissy, but I can get great feedback if I want it from a sustained note, AND if I stop dead and mute the strings, even at tremendously high gain I don't get any feedback at all...

I just got the XXL bass for Christmas. It's a great pedal, but to get that awesome clanky, gritty sound, you need either an active bass or fresh strings. It's a very 'honest' pedal; the tone of your clean bass comes through very strongly. Unfortunately, if your clean tone is a bit soft (muddy?) due to older strings (or flats!), then chances are you won't like this pedal, as it just sounds a bit thin and 'crunchy'.

Why are adjectives to describe distortion so difficult? :P
