distortion advice

I need some recommendations for a good distortion pedal. I like a warm tube overdrive type of sound. I am not very experienced with pedals so your advice will be appreciated.

Price range and your amp and bass would be helpful to know.

In that case,
Digitech Bad Monkey
Noebles Bass Overdrive
Or if you can spend a little more Fuzzrocious Dark Driving.

The pedals that I have read some about are the big muff, boss odb3, ibanez tube screamer, vt bass, and a ashdown pedal.

How cheap are you talking? As Sam said below, a Bad Monkey is definitely the cheapest.

Not a ton of solid choices under $100 that you'll love and not sell in a month. Look into the bad monkey!

You could find a good used Sansamp BDDI for something around there. IMO, that seems to get the job done on a professional level.

Warm tube like overdrive.

It is designed for guitar but rolling back a little treble makes it very usable on bass.

From what I remember, yes. There is a bass mod that is fairly simple too that can add additional lows. But I never tried/needed it. In my opinion a little bass cut is desirable with OD tones. I just compensate for the slight loss in lows with a little extra volume. Having said that the bad monkey has a bass control. You can regain any low end loss with that too.

How's it compare to the big muff?

Very different. The Bad Monkey is an overdrive while the Big Muff is a full on fuzz/distortion. (my favorite one, at that.)

YouTube - ‪Bassfuzz.com Presents: EHX Russian Muff‬‏

Should tell you if you like Big Muffs. Definitely recommend the Russian versions for bass. Pretty sure they can still be had used for under $100, otherwise the new XO Bass Big Muff is like $80 new (haven't tried one though.)

If you want a warm tube overdrive sound, a tube-emulation pedal like a sansamp bass driver and a hartke bass attack pedal would be right up your alley, if you want a tube-screamer like sound, pedals like the voodoo lab sparkle drive, the way huge electronics pork lion, and the Ibanez bass tube-screamer would be great choices for that.

Is the bad monkey better than the digitech overdrive pedal for bass?

Better is subjective, but I would say, "Yes."
