distortion to go with an svt

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi all, Ihave an ampeg svt and looking for a very nice sounding distortion to bring out the grind on this head. i'm not looking for heavy distortion just grind to add texture to the sound, think the kind of sound you hear often in pop rock with distorted p-bass.

I play fingerstyle and because of my technique I need to have the gain almost all the way up to start getting that nice overdriven sound.

Price is not an issue here but I don't see myself paying 500$ for a distortion pedal.

Thanks in advance

Do a search for the Flipster pedal on here. I would use it as boost to get some natural overdrive on those tubes.

If I understand, it is a pedal you have to build? I would prefer not to go that way but thanks anyway.

Sounds to me like you want a boost pedal, not an overdrive pedal... That'll effectively increase the gain and allow the SVT's own distortion to come through better which is what you say you want...

you could use an ampeg SVP PRO as your dirty channel and bypass it for your cleaner sound. Thats if you really want to get more of the ampeg tone. I am thinking ABY box and have the SVVP going into the "Power Amp In". Depending on your model you may not be able to do this. Some cut out the preamp when you plug into the power amp in.

I've owned a lot of dirtboxes, so I'm just going to throw out a few I was able to get decent sounds out of that you might be interested in: Fulltone Bass Drive, Xotic BB Preamp, EBS Multidrive, HBE Hematoma Bass Overdrive/Preamp, Boss Bass Overdrive. If you want to go the tube route check out the EBS Valve Drive and the EHX English Muff'n.

I've posted a few sound samples for various distortion pedals, you can find those here if you want to check them out:

And I think there's better options than the Flipster for you. While the Flipster can create some overdrive, it's main purpose is to sound like an Ampeg Flip Top, which I don't think is what you're going for.

Is this an old or new SVT?

I've tried a lot of pedals with my 70's SVT and the two that I thought sounded best were the Budda Phatbass and the Duncan Twin Tube.
