Distortion help

Sign in to disble this ad
I play in a contemporary progressive rock band and am really struggling to get my tone right for the heavier sections. I want a really growly, aggressive sound that will cut through and compliment the two distorted guitarists. I do not want a lot of the noise associated with a heavy distortion, simply the growl and grit which will sit better in the mix.

I guess that the closest i can come to with an example is that of Alex Katunich (Dirk Lance) on some of his work with incubus (notably sections in Out From Under - Make Yourself, Redefine & Calgone - S.C.I.E.N.C.E).

For reference here is the band myspace, lillywhite was recorded using my old rig, but the problem is still apparent in that recording.

Any suggestions will be gratefully received.

p.S - I do not mind long wait times and high prices for custom/boutique gear if that is the best way to achieve my goals.

So that sound is just a blended Big Muff. I suggest a Sanford and Sonny Bluebeard. But it is both expensive and has a long wait time. But you wont need to blend it. Probably cheaper to just get a normal Big Muff and blender.
