so im a big fan of guitar distortion pedals on my bass. I currently use a DOD 250 it's the yellow one(reissue). i like it but i don't love it. it sounds aggressive and that's what i want. i love the sound of the Proco rat even more. I'm looking for anything around this area of sound. i've heard of a the rust driver ord the OCD? any suggestions. im actually big into how the rat takes the bottom out.

I, too, enjoy guitar distortion and fuzz effects on bass. I play so guitarishly they seem to respond to my playing style better than a lot of dedicated bass pedals. Based on what you've said I think you'll absolutely love the Fulltone OCD. It's very aggressive, and if you want it to, it can sound very guitarlike. If you dial the drive down on it it will cut your bass if that's what you want, but can be very heavy with the drive cranked too. Sounds a lot better than say, the newer Rat 2 to me. Pretty musical, which, honestly, is something that is often missing in a lot of bass players' overdriven sounds that I hear.

just throwing it out...i really don't like fuzz.
my first pedal was a Boss odb-3 and i really didn't like it. it wasn't dirty enough for me....i did like it. Then i got a muff and i couldn't stand it for what i play. It was so muddy at times also to the point i couldn't distinguish individual notes if i played fast. it just sounded all together. I've heard a Rat on bass and it sounds great and the only other thing i've heard that was the sound i wanted was through and old vintage Amped v4b. no pedal just turned up and it sounded like a beaut.

go here....http://myspace.com/youngwidows and listen to the bass in old skin and then formerer. im more than posotive this is a proco RAT. infact i know i've seen picture of his pedal board. im going for this.

I know what you mean... I've got an Ampeg V4BH, it's a great amp I think. Can get pretty distorted. Also, I've got some soundclips of the OCD if you'd like here's with a Jazz:

and here's a heavier sound with my Gibson SG Bass:

Yep, same exact setting, drive cranked, tone at less than 12 o'clock. You can get even more bite by turning the tone up more! The SG Bass is much heavier sounding and higher output which results in the heavier, more distorted sound. I imagine you should get a pretty similar tone playing with a Jaguar to that of my Jazz. If you want a high gain distorted sound, I think the OCD is probably the next best thing to a cranked amp.

Thanks! And if you decide to pick an OCD up down the road, it sounds great with a 9v power supply or with a 9 volt battery, but I like to run it at 18 volts, which has even more clarity which is great for those low notes on bass.

I used the OCD in HP mode. To me it sounds like it has a little more bottom than the LP mode.

And since you seem to dig gnarly distorted tones, check this out:

http://media.putfile.com/Germania2

That's a Germania Treble Booster pushing a Z. Vex Box of Rock. That's about the gnarliest tone I've ever heard. Although I haven't tried pushing the OCD with a Treble Booster yet...

That's the Gibson SG Bass and one of my Ampeg heads (set pretty clean) and probably just an Ashdown ABM115 cab. Other than that like I said I used an HBE Germania Treble Booster and a Z. Vex Box of Rock for pedals, and these sorts of combinations also sound really gnarly with my Jazz Bass... right now I'm using an Analogman Bass Beano Boost for a treble booster, it has more bottom than the Germania but isn't quite as gnarly.

Mark, you need a ZVex Machine. Right now.

Yeah, could sound interesting with my fuzz pedals, though the Machine never really appealed to me. Sounds more like something I'd use for industrial type music, which I don't play. Even the Germania into the Box of Rock sounds essentially like pushing a Marshall really hard with a Treble Booster, which still has a sort of classic vibe to it, which, it's unfortunate but I'm a classic rock guy.

I don't play industrial, really. I just like super thick fuzz. A Machine pushing a fuzz (especially with a clean blend on the fuzz, so you let more Machine get through) basically creates a wall of fuzz with an intense top end and a punch that I've never heard out of a fuzz. One of these days, I will make clips...

Yeah, sure, I'd like to hear that! Right now I'm using a Prescription Electronics Experience pedal for fuzz, which I really like. I wonder how the Machine would sound with that... this is how the Experience sounds on my low C# string:

It's possible, I'm not familiar with the DOD 250 never having bothered with one myself, but what makes the treble booster work with another overdrive is how dynamic and amplike in it's responsiveness the overdrive is, which the Box of Rock is incrediably amplike, and so would be the OCD. If you're not digging the 250, it might not respond well to a treble booster, it could just get all trebly and nasty, which the more amplike boxes do in a good way with a treble booster.
