Distortion pedal for a guitar

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi, I'm planning on switching back to guitar because my band is having difficulty finding a rhythm guitar player and there is an abundance of bass players in my area. I've just bought a new GK 1001RB and don't particularly want to spend another $1000 or so on a decent guitar amp so i was thinking of just playing my guitar through the GK with a distortion pedal.

Bands main influences are GNR, AC/DC, Led Zeppelin type bands so i will be looking for a tone similar to any of those guitar players. While i realise this setup probably isn't ideal i was wondering if anyone has any recommendations as to which pedal i should be using

I'll be the first to say that guitar through bass amp doesn't sound great at all. I've played my Gretsch Pro Jet through an LM-II I used to own (using bass speakers) and it just sounded like mud. IMHO You'd be better off getting a guitar cab and waiting on the EHX 44 Magnum, buying some other cheap solid-state amp, or borrowing a real guitar amp from a friend/the lead guitarist.

However, I will say that you shouldn't need a rhythm guitarist if you just play more notes on bass and switch on a distortion.

SansAmp TriAC? Pretty versatile, but I haven't much experience with dirt on guitar.

I agree a guitar does not sound too good through a bass amp but I do it all the time. I'm using a markbass lmii through a 2x10 bass cab.

It usually sounds weird, but it might be a good weird. I really like using bass heads for guitar (into a guitar cab), usually tube heads though.

You will want to be careful running your very powerful GK into a guitar cab, and watch the low end. I think the Proco Rat is a fairly versatile OD/dist pedal, might be worth looking into.
