I personally really love the sound a marshall guv'nor pedal gives out (gain cranked, mids scooped) when paired with a tube amp. I use another rig that is clean with an a/b/y box, and it sounds amazing. It's my secret weapon... so shhhhhh

For some the "best" might be a Bass Big Muff @$80 or it might be a Wholly Mammoth @$350. There are quite a few bass distortions in between. Some have a blend and some don't need a blend, and some need one but don't have one which is where the dedicated blend pedal comes it.
What do you want to sound like?

So far I can't be parted with a VT Bass, a Bass Blowtorch, an Attack Goat, a Prunes and Custard, and a bass Blogger. More research to do...

Maybe Wolfmotherish..........

or Cliff Burtonish........

Just lookin for ideas of what to look at when I get to the store. I will be bringing my pedals with and prolly some headphones, just to get a taste. I'll "know" when it's the one.

Should I set the pedal between the Sansamp and chorus?

Wille's in St Paul has a ton of pedals... I bought my Fulltone Bassdrive from them. They usually have sweet basses to drool on as well

American Guitar and Band in Maple Grove has a pretty decent selection according to their website. Not sure how much of it is in stock though.

If you want to sound like Cliff Burton i think the silver big muff will be a great choise . It's a guitar pedal but lots of bassists use it , and Cliff Burtons bass lines sounds more like guitar than bass .

My Pigtronix OFO Disnortion gives me everything I need. Parallel OD/Fuzz in series after an octave distortion.

Pigtronix also makes standalone overdrives - extreme or subtle - polysaturator and aria respectively.

I suggest you try to play those, as well as check out the VT Bass or any of the other character pedals from Tech21, as there should be some amazing tones from that line.

Put the pedal in front of everything and have a great time working out your gear!

Tried out the ValveDrive and was blown away! My rig is an Aguilar DB750 and S410. I thought it was tubey and fat before, but the ValveDrive on just-before-breaking-up setting made it sound twice as big.

Heard good things about the Catalin Bread SFT, but I haven't tried it myself.

I also like my Blowtorch, Fulltone Bass Drive Mosfet, and Polish Love, all totally different. The widest range of tones might be the Blowtorch (super modern/digital) and the ValveDrive (warm fat tubey), totally different but both very cool.

If you like the Wolfmother Dimension sound get an EHX tube pedal. I have had the Hot Tubes, Tube Zipper, and English Muff'n. They all get that sound. The Muff'n is what Chriss Ross of Wolfmother uses actually.
