Question Distortion Question - Very Specific, Need Recommendations

Sign in to disble this ad
For those of you that have seen my board, I use a Landmine pedal for all out distortion, sometimes running it into a sansamp.

I am searching for a similar pedal (rip-your-face-off distortion) with specific requirements:

4 Must haves:

1) It must be true-bypass.
2) It must have a 3 band EQ (bass, mid, treble).
3) LED indicator light
4) AC adapter jack

The following are things that would be NICE but not absolute:

1) The amount of gain can be preset (such as the Landmine or DOD death metal, etc) but it would be nice if it could be adjustable.

4) If possible, a MIX function to blend in the effect with the original signal

Thanks.

I should have included 2 more pieces of info:

1) I would like something without tubes

2) Not to start a flame war for the EH users, but I am not a fan of EH pedals. I know them and I know them well, but they are not to my liking.

But ... but, it fits all your must have specifications. At least give it a chance.

I have tried the muffin. I am looking for something much harsher sounding, think death metal scooped guitars. My problem with EH pedals has always been NOISE.

I should add, that IF the Landmine or DOD death metal was true-bypass (and possibly a MIX function) I would have my answer.

Buy a Barge VB-Jr. Adds both to any pedal.

I'm looking for everything I need in one pedal to avoid using any more pedalboard real estate.

I already use a true-bypass looper setup with my pedals.

I wouldn't suggest the Blowtorch. For a very synthy, buzzy and midrange focused fuzz sure. But not for what the OP wants.

My suggestion probably would have been a Barge VB-jr too.

I've since realized that a heavy distortion isn't really a tone I need for the music I do, but I went through a search for one for a while. My favorites were the Landmine, the Tech 21 XXLB and the HAO Rust Ride. All of them benefited from a clean blend, but were the kind of crunchy distortion I had in my head.

For a while I considered either an Aguilar AG500 or the AGRO which is a rack version of the dirty channel from that head. No clean blend I'm afraid, but I really dug the distorted tone. TBer jasonbraatz did this soundclip a while back that really had me gassing for one.

Probably not a lot of help, but I'm having trouble thinking of something that fits exactly what you want.

I know this is likely the opposite of what you're looking for, but I wonder what an SWR Interstellar Overdrive would sound like in this situation?

Really though, I have no suggestions. Sorry. I understand your tone description I'm just not sure I know enough about pedals I hope you find something to your liking.

This may be the least clever comment I've ever made, but for all out scooped metal distortion, how about a Boss MT-2 Metal Zone? Ticks all the boxes, and has ridiculous amounts of gain.

If you were willing to bend on the no-ehx rule, the Metal Muff meets all of your criteria. High-gain distortion, dist knob, 3-band eq, true-bypass.

If you really don't like EHX, how about the ZVEX Box of Metal? That has all of the same control

From what I can tell, these are your options:
EHX Metal Muff
BBE Crusher
George Dennis GD200 Distorted Mind Rock
Pigtronix Polysaturator
T-Rex Bloody Mary
MXR DD-11 Tribute Dime Distortion
Seymour Duncan SFX-08 Power Grid
Krank Distortus Maximus

I know it has one internal tube - but tubes also give a variety of different tones with just a quick and easy tube swap.

I'd try a look at the Tubeworks Real Tube - or it's metal brother, the Overlord.
They're about the same footprint as a Boss pedal, but a bit taller. I'm not sure whether they're TB or not.
I have the Blue tube myself - has more than enough bass on tap, and I can't tell the difference in tones when I TB it with a looper.

EDIT - here's a demo;

The Box of Metal by Zvex is definitely something that has caught my eye. I will be looking into it.

As for the Metal Zone, I used that for many, many years. It's also digital and not true bypass and I love the analog sound of my Landmine.

I will be checking out all of the other suggestions. Thanks guys

Keep em coming if you know of any more.

Another one I just realized....since I really like the sound of my digitech death metal, they make a similar model in the hardwire series which is true bypass.
