Being on a budget, I've been very cost-conscious and when I decided to stop carrying them in a back pack and actually make a pedalboard, price was tantamount.
So I hit the local grocery and found a 'craft tote' that measured big enough for the biggest of my three pedals and bought it for $6. Then I laid out the pedals, marked where holes would need to be for the zip-ties, and pierced it with my soldering iron.

Then I installed everything on the lid, and it worked. The hinges are half-round, so I can pop the lid off and use it alone, then reattach and throw in all my junk. The hardest part was burning through the edge for the input and output cables. I had to remove a lot of plastic.

But the plastic tote is an interesting idea in this case. I suspect some foam tape on the lid would help keep it from sliding around on the stage.

I was planning on drilling the holes, but I thought it might cause tears that would weaken the plastic where the weight was. The lid is actually pretty thick, though... The zip-ties go through the lid, so they grip the carpet, but on wood it does move.
Also, I think I misused the word tantamount. Paramount?
