DIY Expression Pedal for DL4

Sign in to disble this ad
My guitarist's 535q wah took a dump on him, and he gave it to me. So I want to replace the pot inside to mod it into a very sturdy expression pedal for my Line 6 DL4 delay. But, I"m no electronics guru. Can you please help me with schematics, parts, instructions, URL links, or anything that would help me? Thanks in advance.

Here are wah pots and gears.

Kind of pricey to me. You could get a cheap expression pedal for that much on ebay. Maybe less sturdy, but I don't get why people need everything to be so heavy duty. Nothing I've owned has broken as a result of me stepping on it. Maybe that's just me.

I already have the shell, and i'm taking the wah parts out. The link you provided sells 100k ohm wah pots, I believe the DL4 uses a 10k ohm linear taper pot. I'm basically looking for instructions on how to turn a gutted 535q wah pedal into a dl4 exression pedal.

The value of the pot rarely matters actually, since they are usually just wired as a simple voltage divider. But, it does vary depending on the manufacturer, so try and work out what exactly is required before you start.

For a simple voltage divider, here's what I would do:

Open it up, gut it, except for the pot and the stereo jack socket (should be the input socket.)

The pot should have three terminals - pick one of the outside terminals and appoint it as "ground."

The opposite outside terminal is therefore now the "input" (if you will) and the middle terminal is the "output".

Usually, exp pedals use a stereo jack connector, or TRS jack (tip, ring, sleeve). Again, usually, the tip is the input (treadle-controlled voltage) to the device being controlled, the ring is the output from the device being controlled (a constant voltage) and the sleeve is ground. Wire up the stereo jack you left in the wah housing - connect using a TRS to TRS jack cable and Bob's my uncle.

You might find that the treadle works backwards at this point. If so, swap the two outside wires on the pot.
