DM-4: Would you do it?

Sign in to disble this ad
I finally tried a DM-4 because I'm a Distortion/Overdive/Fuzz junkie and this seems to dominate my pedal buying habits. Here's the dilemma: I thought the Rat modeler and Muff modeler were better than any I've personally owned, and the Jet Phase was AWESOME! The problem is I didn't like any of the other models on it.

Therein lies the obvious dilemma: Would you spend the $250 for 3 great models? I'm just looking for some feedback and thank you guys in advance.

maybe. my big qualm with those line6 pedals is you cant cascade the channels into one another. I had the dl and it bummed me out(i love delay on delay).

I have NO experience with the dm other than standing there when my guitarist was trying one out. THe jet and rat were dope.

Im sure with some tweaking you can get ONE more workable sound out of it! also the noise gate option seems cool.

dont they go significantly cheaper used?

good luck.

I just remembered that Trevor Dunn uses this thing for Moonchild and Fantomas! Those are great ditortion sounds he gets. hold up theres a vid interview with him explaining HIS 4 tones: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eGn6mrSViKY about 240 into it.

Well, there's four presets...so if you can find a fourth one to boost another pedal or something, then yeah!!!

I only used three settings on my old DL-4...It was worth it!

The Trevor Dunn factor is making me lean towards yes, actually. If you haven't yet, pick up John Zorn's "Moonchild"...it's AWESOME!!

i've had this pedal and i've always loved it. just like you i only liked a few of them at first but what was great was that i liked multiple settings of those models so at one point i had two different muff presets and 2 different tube screamer presets. i still thought it was worth it.

it has since been replaced by my m13 which has the dm-4 built in so i still use one in some form.

:EDIT: i just wanted to add that even though i did only like 2 of the models at first i eventually got use out of 7 or 8 of the models, some do grow on you

+10 to the Trevor Dunn factor.

On the other hand, the DM4 usually doesn't respond like the the pedals it models if you put different effects before it. For instance, I found that neither the Rat nor the Muff models could handle a reverb before it -- they both got super muddy and had a hard time figuring out new notes coming through the verb.

You can't treat it like the real pedals, it doesn't work the same way, but it should be fine if you put it early in the chain and don't expect total accuracy.

I'm glad you mention this, it really gives me another factor to think about.

And then save up for a BOSS OD-20 so you can cascade your little heart out.

(or just get an os-2...)

I was the cascade guy, not Vegas, and the od20 lags when you kick it on.

Vegas you should, if you havent check out the other 3 Moonchild albums. Astronome, Six Litanies For Heliogabalus, and The Crucible....bonecrushing bass, and Jazzy stuff....that Zorn guy sure is whacky.

If I loved 'em, I'd happily pay, but I'd probably buy a used unit.

I bought the FM4 (used) just to get an envelope filter I could save the settings on - the other stuff on it is just a fun bonus but I would have happily bought it just for the programmable Tron Down and Tron Up.

The DM4 is a unit I'm currently thinking of getting for my guit*r gigs as I need a very light tube-screamer'ish drive and would like some heavier stuff as well.

Yeah - I'll be getting (or building) an expression pedal so I can use it as a wah occasionally, just for a different sound to my Dunlop 105Q.
