Do all compressors have a delay before they kick in?

Sign in to disble this ad
Ive been messing around with the comps on my X3, and the one thing ive noticed is that they take a split second to kick in leaving this ginormous volume "spike" at the beginning.

Also, the post-gain control seems to be affecting this non-compressed pre-compression spike.....

??? are pedal comps like this ???

Im really confuseded....

You should be able to set the attack time so that you won't notice the "spike." If it's not adjustable, and you are having that problem, I would look to another comp. I love my EBS Multicomp...

I have a funny feeling its just the way the POD is modelling the comps, and that its modeling the post-gain "wrong"

Hopefully Bongo-"King of the Comps"-mania will pop in and let me know....

All compressors have an attack time; that time may be fixed or adjustable, fast or slow, depending on the specific design. It's funny that the other guy recommended the EBS, as it has a fixed attack time which does also allow an initial transient spike to pass. So if the attack time on the modeled comps is fixed, then that's that.

Additionally, I noticed the Magicstomp models were better at tone modeling than they were at functional peak limiting, so perhaps the POD models have a similar tendency.

Sure, post-gain is post-compression, but it is a serial volume cut/boost that affects everything that passes through the compressor, whether the compression has affected it or not.
