I ask this because my Boss DS-1, which my uncle gave me five years ago, is hardly a distortion pedal anymore, more of a light overdrive. The DS-1 is supposed to be a pretty heavy distortion pedal, and that's not the case for me. Is this just the effect "aging"? |

It got to the point where I couldn't get it to feed back on itself and self-oscillate anymore. So I just found another one on eBay and bought it.

Beyond that, if the jacks are corroded it might diminish the input signal to the point of behaving as you describe. Perhaps you could clean them.
Are the controls scratchy at all?

If you are referencing the sounds difference from when your uncle played with it. It it likely aditional tones made by is amp. For example, | use the vintage switch on my amp to change the tone of my distortion.
Another thing could just be that youve just been plying with it for a long time, or recently been listening to music that is redirecting what your thoughts on exactly what is intense distortion.
Third possibility, the EQs of your bass, | find that higher Mids give a more intense blackmetal-like distortion, where low mids sound closer to 60s style rock.
