I found a MXR Bass DI at a very reasonable price.
What is it for? |

Can it be used as a stomp after the bass and before the Active Input to the existing pre-amp on my combo or is that a bad idea? |

It is basically an EQ box with a switchable distortion channel that happens to be a DI. You can go direct to your effects return jack, you can put it in the middle of your chain and avoid the DI altogether. It is a pretty versatile little DI box. You don't NEED it any more than you need any other gear, but it is a pretty useful tool. I like it better than the BDDI I had, but others prefer the SansAmp. You will have to decide for yourself. |

I've got a Sansamp Bass Driver DI (which is similar to the MXR) permanently on my board because it's so handy. If you found a good price on the MXR, I say pick it up. EQ, distortion and DI all in one.

5sg. | Great! I knew I needed to buy something else!
It's in a pawn shop and doesn't clear until the middle of next month and I put a reserve on it for myself.
Whatchathink? $75.00 is OK? It's super clean and spotless! |

The DI is how I go to the house board at church every Sunday, and sound guys at gigs LOVE the fact that I have my own. Some people use it as an "always on" preamp type effect, but I prefer to use it when I want to go from my bass' natural sound to a mid-scooped clean tone, a grindy rock tone or more of a smooth & creamy old-school R&B tone... I use it more as an actual effect. Also, the ground lift on it literally saved a recent recording session when an unexplainable buzz showed up (and not in my gear )!
Super handy versatile tool!!!
I've never tried the MXR, but I can't see it being too different with all the controls on it.

| | Sometimes it's one more note than what was needed! | | | | | I use a Radial Bassbone, after all the others I've tried you won't catch me using anything else.

The clean channel, helps you dial in a strong signal to hit the front of your amp harder, and the color button gives a really cool, spacious, slightly scooped sound. Nice if you have a loud amp that needs some warmth at lower volumes.
The distortion side is weak: fuzzy, cold distortion that robs the low end. Used slightly it can give a bit of edge but cranked it sounds pretty crappy.
The clean side eq and color more than make up for the weak dirt side.
I've run mine non-stop for a couple years, no problems at all.
