i always go bass ->fuzz ->wah
but a couple of guys really insisted that modulation effects normally are placed before gain/distortion effects!? whats the story, morning glory?

bass-fuzz-wah gives a more natural sound, bass-wah-fuzz gives a synth sound for more out there tones.

I would say the opposite! Bass - wah - fuzz for a less extreme wah sound suited to rock, bass - fuzz - wah for a more synthy sound suited to funk.

Modulation usually goes near the end of the chain, before delay and reverb, but I wouldn't consider wah as a modulation effect.

I put the wah before the bass and the fuzz.

You just gotta try different combos and do what sounds good to you... FYI, I do dirt into auto wah into phaser.

Wah -> Dirt only really works IMO/E if you've got an instrument that has a lot of hi-mids and treble in the first place, and only really with bright overdrives and low gain distortions. The wah tends to get masked by fuzz especially.

Dirt -> Wah however, IMHO/E is the better sounding of the 2. I am a real fan of Dirt -> Wah, then blending the wah sound with the "dry" sound of the Dirt. Only really guaranteed to work on a multi or if the blend has a phase reverser on the wah channel tho, since some filters have the silly habit of outputting an inverted phase signal....

Personally tho, thru experimenting with my GT-10B, I have become more of a fan of Pitch Bend -> Dirt. I've gotten some almost-wah sounds (more of a WHOA!) out of it, but thicker.

Wah into fuzz for me. Otherwise, the wah on/off transition sounds clunky. Doing it that way doesn't create as dramatic a sweep (or maybe it's that the wah impact is less pronounced) but overall it sounds better to me. You really have to try it both ways to decide.

both..

if the fuzz is fairly low gain, then its most usable to put it after a wah. if its really high gain, you can hardly hear the wah effect before it- and if you put a high gain synthy fuzz (red messdrive, anyone?) before a wah, you get wild synth sounds.

For classic wah you want wah -> fuzz, it gives a more pronounced sweep. fuzz -> wah sounds quite different, not what I personally want from a wah effect. But in the end it's personal preference.
Other modulation (chorus, flange etc) invariably sounds better after dirt, imo.

dont turn the volume up on the Fuzz box if you run it bass-fuzz-wah . I had to replace a dioed in my cry baby and was told that i was putting too much boost to my wah

Im currently playing around with OD-> Wah-> Fuzz.

the OD makes the wah sweep cut through the fuzz a little better, but its still much more subtle and fuzzy than OD-> Fuzz-> Wah

I've been playing OD -> Wah -> Fuzz for the last few years, but it's gonna depend on what fuzz I have on hand.

Never say never, but usually it's Fuzz before Wah, Wah before Overdrive.

I used to run Sparkle Drive -> Dunlop CFH -> English Muff'n, ages ago. It was actually pretty thick IIRC....

I had a flanger pedal where the coolest tone was obtained by running a cable from one of the stereo outs plugged halfway into the input. It created a weird synth-like tone that could be manipulated with the control knobs.

Do whatever sounds best

I use Wah then Fuzz, but I'm using a Morley PWB, which sounds really harsh used the other way around. Plus, what would I use that huge boost for other than making dirt pedals go crazy?
