Do you use effects for fun or for tone?

Do you use effects for for or for shaping your tone?

(I.E. Flipping on a envelope filter just for the heck of it, or turning on your distortion to add to the song)

i play in a power trio and i virtually have an overdrive pedal on all the time as well as a fuzz and and envelope follower most of the time as well...as i need to fill space when the guitard is solo-ing....! so for tone is the answer

BOTH!!! It's always fun to click on a pedal and make weird sounds...and sometimes it's downright neccessary to do that for the song...

Fun mainly. I could go an entire set without any of my effects, but I simply refuse to

Fun. I could do every gig I have without effects at all, but for the first time in 10-12 years I'm using them again.

Both. It's fun to play, but I would be lost without my dirt boxes.

Mostly fun. Because I play with a praise and worship band I can't normally fit my bass muff or a qtron in very well.

i play in a metalband so i always keep the bassoverdrive on and for my solopart in the set i use chorus to get that dreaming sound. besides of that i don't have any pedals but if i'd have the money, i would get more. i like pedals!

+1...I am in the same boat...and could do every gig without effects..but I just like to add some chorus or flange to a couple of different songs (so I guess I would say I use effects for tone)...thats about all I use anymore though...I seldom take my pedalboard out to a gig, and just toss a chorus in my gig bag.

tough to define.
it is for fun, but to serve the song.
I mean, if you use an envelope filter somewhere for instance, it may be fun, but there's a reason for it. and the reason isnt to screw up the song! so obviously for some kind of tone!

+1 for the categories and idea
-1 for the sansamp

Some songs require synth effect in their nature.. To give the exact feeling you've gotta synthesize..

Actually the whole thing is fun but I'd say the effects that are always on are your tone, and the effects going in/out are your fun+tone part.... If you take it to out of the world effects basis that's pure fun...
