Does anyone run a VT Bass into a tube power amp?

I'm starting to think that using my VT bass (as an "always on" preamp) into my tube power amp might be overkill. Does anyone do the same? Is there another preamp without the "tube amp emulation" of the VT Bass that might serve me better?

There is no reason not too - it is an effect and depending on your needs it could be used a variety of ways.

If you Amp does not have dual channels is set for a clean tube tone and you want to add some wooliness without adjusting the Amp then you kick on the VT when needed. Or if you want the wooliness or slight grit on always leave it on and then turn it off for a cleaner tone.

No reason to think that it's overkill at all. If you're getting the sound you want, then go for it.

The only thing I've heard people poo-poo around here is an actual pedal with a tube in it run into a tube amp. Some say it has a tendency to get a little muffled. I personally don't care. If it sounds good, it sounds good. If you're happy, then be happy.

rock.

I'm willing to bet that that will sound great. Go for it. Maybe look at it this way:

VT = [Emulated] Tube Preamp -> Tube Power Amp

Tube amps have tube pre and power sections anyways, so I'd say it's not overkill at all.

I'm always juggling a fine line between complexity and sound.
I like trying pedals, and playing with sounds. But the more pedals I have between me and my amp, the more there is to go wrong.

The thing about the Tech 21 gear is that the EQ is really powerful; if you brush against a knob with your foot during a gig, it's going to make a difference -- and it may take you a while to figure out what you did.

I would only add the pedal if it really, vitally improved my amp's sound. And I'd stick it safely up on my amp, and set-and-forget.

But ultimately, yeah, whatever gets you the tone you like.

I'll find out as soon as my 400+ gets out of the shop.

I use mine with my SVT-4 Pro on all the time. The VT is the preamp/effect I've been waiting for ever since I started playing 15 years ago.

I really like to push my B-15R with my VT Bass... and my SVT-CL / 8x10E likes it as well...

I like the option of having a bit more complexity to my tone. And like JimmyM says - - can't have too much of a good thing!!!!
