I have one laying around but I'm afraid of blowing my bass amp with it.
Anyone tried it out? Is this safe to do?

Yes it is safe, just watch your gain levels. Start out at low volumes if you wish to experiment.
But as an FYI, it sounds horrible. |

But you can totally use it to provide a pretty convincing Korn sounding guitar imitation. Note I said "guitar" and not bass. Boost the lows, boost the high mids, gain about 3/4 up, and palm mute chug away. |

| | | | I used to have one of those on my pedalboard. I ran it parallel with a clean signal, and I got some pretty good tones out of it that way. By itself it sucks way too much low end, and it sounds awful. |

The 2 bassist i know that use them play in doom bands. I messed with the MT-2 at a local shop and i honestly didn't forsee it being used in anything that i do.

Anyone tried it out? Is this safe to do? | It works but its not optimal. I used a HM-2 back in the day when I was in a Grindcore band and it worked all right for playing fast and ferocious, but you loose definition. Guitar pedals tend to have a little too much in the mids for bass, but the mid-sweep on the Metal Zone might make it easier. I think bassfuzz.com did a review of this.
You'll end up with a Napalm Death or Rotten Sound kind of tone. |

Originally added it to emulate the Gallup / Hook tone, but after experimenting with it for awhile the EQ is quite versatile.

That what I used it for.
If it's your goal to fill in for a second guitar in a trashmetal powertrio then the MetalZone is awesome.
If you are looking for real bass distortion that respects your role as bass player and your place in the sound spectrum: lots of better alternatives.
I also got a low gain metallic gritty overdrive out of it once with some nice harmonics.
Depends very much on wich gear you have. It's not that an expensive pedal (IMO) so pick one up (used maybe) and experiment with it. |

I play in a 3 piece hardcore band we were thinking of adding distortion to the bass on some songs to make up for no rhythm guitar. I'm playing a 3 way eq stingray 4 out of an acoustic stack with a 6 way EQ on the head, but with any serious bass boost coming from my active preamp i have to set the gain way low on the head as is.

| | | | i have one and tried to use it in my prog/hardcore/metal band. It sounded great on it's own and I was pumped to try to use it, but it just gets completely lost in the mix. Turning the bass all the way up just makes it ridiculously boomy. I'd love to try and mod this puppy, I think blend is probably the way to go though. Just cant justify $40 on a blend pedal just to use this.

I had one many, many years ago, before I knew better.
It was a tone-sucking piece of junk.
