Does Someone Make A Db Meter In A Pedal Form

Sign in to disble this ad
I was just wondering if anyone has seen a db meter in a pedal form. I saw the sale in the classifieds of the one in the rack form but it would be neat to see one in a pedal form.

Never seen one... plenty exist in hand-held form, though.

Come to think of it, I don't think I've ever seen a rackmounted one in person. Everyone I know (myself included) uses the handheld stuff.

But then again, few of us even have them. They're not exactly a household tool.

I'm curious to know why you would need one?

Are you trying to read the decibel level of your bass before the amp, because I guarantee you it is very low, and if you are trying to read the level after the amp, an in-line pedal would need a built in transducer of some sort.

Perhaps you are trying to read the level your full band plays at...in which case a hand held would be my recommendation as you can get readings from various areas of a club or rehearsal hall.

...hmm, you know what? I think we need clarification on what kind of meter we're really talking about here. I might be thinking of the wrong thing. Perhaps a link to the rack unit you're talking about would help?

The one on the Punch Factory is seen on many compressors, but it shows dB reduction as a result of compression. Entirely different kind of meter.

I think the OP is looking for a "blinky light" meter, not an actual SPL meter.

But that doesn't really get us anywhere, because we have no idea what he's actually trying to do with this thing that we're not really sure he's talking about.

Agreed...I'm very confused on this one.

He's trying to get a fancy light show pedal. One that simply reacts to his playing, almost like a tuner does but instead it just has lights to give you a Db readout. It has absolutely nothing to do with compression, tone, or anything else besides a pedal that will give you a light show!

Wow...I've heard of pointless gear, but this takes the cake.

Yeah I think you're better off getting a pedal tuner that will give you that light show effect when you're playing. This way at least it serves its purpose as a tuner and secondly acts as a "light show"

Not if you want to level the output of multiple basses, so the sound engineer gets consistent levels.

True, but I would just leave that to the soundman and his trusty PFL button.

I don't think this would help much, I use 3 basses, and have never felt like I needed to use a meter to level them.

Plus, meters lie...take a high twangy bass level it, and a boomy bass, and level it identically....do you think the soundman will adjust his level for FOH, I guarantee it!

Maybe a VU meter is what he needs, not a decibel meter. How much volume is there before the amp?

True, but the meter isn't lying, per se. The issue, instead, is EQ. Some frequencies stand out more than others in a given mix, regardless of SPL or gain.

You could try and work with one of these if you want pretty lights:

Not sure if it's connected or not, but I just sold what he's talking about in Rack form yesterday in the Classifieds section.

Yes, it's basically frivilous fluff to fill a rack slot.

Ah... so it IS essentially like a giant VU meter, but with LEDs instead of the needle.

Fluffy, indeed.

The gear that could make use of these likely already has a meter to measure signal levels... so it's redundant in most cases.

I guess if someone really does want a light show and little else...

I think what started all this was the rackmount blinky blinky meter for sale in the classifieds, and someone (OP, maybe?) mentioned that it would be neat if it came in a pedal form.

No real purpose, just for show.
