Question Doubling Guitar Lines on Bass...

Sign in to disble this ad
My Friends,

I am sure this might well have come up before but wanted to solicit some thoughts on how to accomplish a particular thing, ideally given the gear I already have in my arsenal.

I am subbing with a local group at the end of the month and one of the songs to be covered is "Cult of Personality" by Living Color. During the several guitar solo excursions in the original recording I noted that the bass and guitar both continue to play the main riff in the background. I grant that I could safely ignore this and just worry about my bass, but I would rather get somewhat closer to the original recording, especially since we're doing the gig three-piece. I currently have a DOD Bass 30 but it does not appear to be able to order the effects in the way I need (pitch shift one octave up and add distortion, while leaving the fundamental note at pitch and unaffected). Is there a way to do this with the Bass 30, or is this going to require a different set of pedals entirely? I have other distortion and overdrive pedals but I don't think that the Bass 30 unit will allow me to split the fundamental and octave signals so I can apply the OD to just the octave signal.

My sincere thanks for any assistance you might be able to provide!

----
Kurt

Yeah, I think you're going to need a splitter. Route one to pitch shift+OD and leave the other one clean.

played a few sub gigs with a hard rock band last year and i used a micro pog and vt for that song. don't worry about keeping the unaffected signal clean...it actually sounds better with a little distortion on it imho.

Akai Unibass would do it, but probably not really worth chasing one for one song...

Talking Kewl...

My Friends,

Very sincere thanks for the information! I'll try it with the signal one octave up and overdriven and see how it works out. Worst-case I'll split the signal and recombine at the amp.

Thanks again!

Kurt

I saw Living Colour in 1994, and Doug Wimbish had some pretty wacky stuff going on IIRC. I'd say just have fun with it.

Again, IIRC when Muzz Skillings played that part live it was pretty much straight. Hit up YouTube and find some original Living Colour vids from before 1992 if you want to know how it was done live.

There is no rhythm guitar track on the recording and both Doug Wimbish and Muzz Skillings always played that part clean tone. So why not you?

IME it's not going to sound like a guitar no matter what you to do it. Granted, it could sound very good, but I don't think you're going to fool people.
