I was using a Pork Loin and was happy with it but, I'm happier with the Mesa Bottle Rocket that replaced it. Lot of good talk about the Darkglass B3K but, it's expensive.

I have the dha vt2 std (non eq) and multidrive for the sound you describe your after I would suggest the dha. I find the multi drive does the heavier distortion better while the dha has more tones in the lighter distortion end of things IMO

More so than a solid state pedal emulating one.

Maybe. I have never heard a single tube preamp that sounded like a tube amp.

I have a Pork Loin and I really like it. I had a VT bass but like Delta, mine got really clanky really fast (and this is after trying every combination of knob turning I could find). I also felt like it changed my basic tone too much. I just got in a Sansamp RPM and I am loving it. I can get so many awesome tones from it.

IM ok with a tube driven pedal. My budget is about $250. I'm looking at the markbass distorsore, ebs multidrive, vt, and now the pork loin. Any other tube drive pedals out there?

I used to have a de Lisle Eighty-Sixed which had an 12AX8 and FT86 and it sounded like a lot of buddies tube amp when it distorted, but that is a $300 pedal...a bit above the budge of the OP.

I didn't specify in my previous post but, the Mesa Bottle Rocket has two 12AX7 tubes. You'll have to come across a used one though because they're no longer in production. The pork loin does not have any tubes (just making sure you knew).

I have used an EHX English Muff'n to a great extent for exactly what you describe. Just turn down the gain and you've got a great "driven" type of sound. It just adds that little bit of grit. I had an EBS Valve Drive that did a pretty good job as well, but I think the Muff'n does it better and gets more tones out of it. The downside is it's huge.

I'm not sure how much the tubes in it actually come into play, but it does sound very similar to my other tube preamps (SVP-CL and SVP-Pro) when trying to go for a similar tone.

I had a blue tube when I was a kid. I loved it, but it simply did not work going into any amp that had full range speakers, tweeters, or direct to mixing board. You must put it through speakers that roll off the top end like guitar cabs do.

I have a VT bass, and I've been mixed on it for a while. It's hard to find the right settings, but once you do, it's pretty nice. It will squeeze the hell out of your dynamic range if you set it to get any kind of dirt, which IMO is a good thing. It really behaves very similarly to a tube amp as far as compression and grit are concerned. It's a little bright, but that's easily solved by turning down the treble.

If you are not necessarily going to go the tube OD route, have you considered something along the lines of an Aguilar Tone Hammer?

The tube emulation on the TH is top notch IMO, and you get an excellent DI box to boot. They still come in under your $250 price range, and IME is more versatile than the Pork Loin (previously owned one), or any run of the mill OD stomp. The tone of your amp (if you do enjoy your original tone) is not colored much, but the TH can add a nice bit of warmth/hair/fuzz tube-like saturation to your signal while still maintaining the voicing of your amp.

Just another idea...

Catalinbread SFT is also a very nice mild OD. Flipster is another.

The VT Bass can get aggressive in the top end if you want it. If you don't, turn the character knob down. I personaly love the combination of grit, edge, and compression it gives... it's pretty much an always-on pedal for me.
