BossDR-3. It's the lowest price of three different Boss Dr Rythym machines. Less than $200 for sure, and pretty full featured. It's the drummer for my 2nd band, atm.

Alesis SR-16. I like it better than the DR 202 and it only costs $100 if you find it used, maybe $150 new. Also you can circuit bend it.

+1 to the Alesis SR-16. Simple to use, you can get 'em for $60-$70 used on evilbay.

none of those will sound 1/2 as good as battery softwear, and will be twice as hard to program, though admitedly battery isn't cheap, but its not expensive either, and comparitivly to hardwear drum machiences its a bargin.

Not everyone:
A) Wants to carry a laptop, or god forbid, PC, to a gig/practice
B) Has a good quality soundcard to run it on
C) Can pay all that money for software and sound libraries.

Turn up with an SR16, plug in, and rock out. Maybe not as realistically sampled but I know which I'd choose (and sometimes the retro drum machine sound actually works- check out The Kills and you'll see what I mean)

I'd suggest putting the brakes on for a second before making your purchase. I too needed a drum machine for several reasons and was checking out all of the cheaper ones. If you go to the online stores or manufacturer websites you'll find that just about every drum machine out there gives you samples. After going through every one available I came across the BOSS DR880. Yes, it's double the price of the cheaper ones (I pad $400 for mine), but it sounds like drums, not a machine. In my research I found it to be the least expensive machine that actually sounds like drums. IMO there's no comparison.

I saved a couple of months longer (I try to budget my musical purchases) and am soo glad I got the better one. There are lots of awesome extras on it too, including FX that really kick butt. + 400 patterns. The newest song "FAIK" on my myspace page below I recorded with it. Didn't even program anything, just let the drums go straight through. Used the FX for all the guitar sounds too. Used it also on "Wash My Hair" - on that I did a little programing.

Just my $.02 but:

I think drum machines that "sound like real drums" are worthless. IMO, nothing SEEMS less Professional than a band that sounds like they have a drummer, but don't. It just feels unnatural and strange. I'm not trying to troll, I'm just throwing the thought out there because I can imagine there must be others who feel the same way.

So you prefer a drum machine that sounds like fake drums? Hmmm... OK.

Drum Buddy!

Whoa, now this is cool.

DRUM BUDDY

Slight OT perhaps...

If you get bored, be sure to watch around 5:00 to 7:00 for the abridged version -- I think it's cool as hell though.

Yeah, but most people will plug it into their PA, not a guitar amp.

By the way, + another one here on the Alesis SR16. No drum machines or drum machine software packages sound like "real drums", IMHO. The reason? Because no speaker system accurately reproduces the assortment of percussive thumps and, especially, the high-end sizzle of cymbals. If what you want is the best bang-for-your buck to practice with, the SR-16 is definitely it.

Thats brillant! And the magicians style hand movements really seal the deal.
Shame they've all been sold
