are there any effects that can help enhance a general bass rig to sound more dub-like? Obviously a synth bass is the way to go, but is there a pedal that can do it? |

A pedal will not make up for limitations of your rig if there are any. But octave pedals that offer an octave down could add some depth. May or may not be the sound you're after. |

DOD Meatbox or a DBX 120A perhaps (with some EQing) if you have some seriously powerful speakers. I wouldn't consider an octave for just the deep dub tone unless you wanted it to be particularly synthy. A low pass filter would be the way to dub bliss. |

| | | Maybe it's the tone controls and where you pluck the strings...I play a Geddy Lee Jazz Bass with a Peavey VB-2 amp through a Carvin 1X15 cab. The way I get serious dub tone is to roll my neck pickup all the way up and the bridge pickup at about 50%. Treble knob is basically at 0. Then, I play with my thumb and pluck the strings really close to the fretboard. Using the thumb is not essential, but it seems to thump more than than fingers You can change your sound a LOT depending on your bass's tone controls and where you pluck the strings. |

That's why I was asking if there is an effects box that will enhance it even further. The only LPFs I've seen are the ones with the sweepy, funk thing and I hate that sound. I'm looking for that deep sine wave sound with just a little bit of attack, decay, and pulsing fatness. |

The only time you get the sound you described is if there is an envelope follower that reacts to playing dynamics or if you manually sweep the cutoff frequency. Definitely go LPF and the standard xerograph is the best I've found for the dub tone. |

| | | | The rig comments are true, But a simple cheap idiot button I use for reggae/ Ska/ Dub is the EHX Mole. Got it for $25 on eBay, and used in line before an EHX bass microsynth (or comparable bass synth) you can get some nasty dub bass. Dig the mole! |

I use 410s and while a 115 will help in the future this is more than plenty for now. I also use a POG2 set to -1 Oct, LPF dimmed, Q dimmed and mild detune and that REALLY helps. Or use my
Groove Regulator set to low attack and decay to get that envelope "bubble"

I've been trying to get that sound for some time but have settled for something close from my rig set up and this helps produce the sounds a lot Barefaced Bass - Dubster
Not cheap but good!!!
Orange Terror bass amps are good for that reggae/dub sound too...i've doen the whole Ampeg SVT thing and have came around to the above cab and the Orange head (for now )...both are really light to carry unlike the Ampeg days...this new Orange/Barefaced rig does a heavy sound indeed.
You could try mixing an LPF as already suggested, or Bill Laswell uses the DOD FX25 filter...i've tried something similar via an old BOSS ME6B multi fx but i mix this through a Boss LS2 mixing my natural bass sound with the effected sound...this way i can get good definition in the lows and it is not too muddy/wooly sounding. Most of the time though i just use my Laky 5501 bass & rig and techniques already mentioned.

If you haven't heard the Mole in person I'm not sure a YouTube video can convey just how deep and utterly massive the sound is, pure bass with a totally clean texture, no bite, no fret sounds, nothing, just round, deep tone.
Also, I've found that a bass parametric EQ (I use an old Boss PQ-3B) can do wonders for getting that totally deep, dub sound. But the Mole is probably the cheapest way to go. Just don't get evicted. Because you might. Seriously. |
