In ear/headphone monitor DI?

Sign in to disble this ad
I need help.
As of late they have decided to go with no amplification on stage at church, all direct using the wedges as your monitor. Well it ain't happen'n. I can't hear myself and the mix through the monitors are uninspiring.
Is there a DI that I can eq, send to the house and use as my monitor to hear me at an adjustable level via headphone or in ear?
Any suggestions????

HI jrex,

Are you pluging your bass direct into a direct box? If so you may want to get a Preamp with eq or a Preamp/DI like the sansamp, it has three band eq and a "ampsimulator" circut. Nice unit for $179.99. Avalon U5 is Awsome if you have the dough. The preamp I ust to use was a Fender TBP-1. Great Unit. Check out www.basstasters.com to get a feel for some DI's and or preamps. As far as monitoring goes, it really depends on how your system is set up, How many AUX's or monitor sends you have and quality of the components in the system. If the sound guys are sending you your own monitor mix through the wedge, it is more than likley on a separate aux. Instead of using the Wedge you could use either a hardwired or wireless in-ear-monitor system and they could create the mix for you in your ears. I use in ears at church and they are a life savor! Look for either Shure PSM 400-700 series units and either Shure e5 ear monitors or Westone UM2's. There are others on the market but these are dual driver units (biamped hi and low driver) that sound really nice. Your still at the mercy of the sound guys doing your mix, but if they have a good ear and have the ability to "shadow your mix" and listen in they should be fine. Aviom makes a system to where each member of the group has a unit at their fingertips and they can control up to 16 channels of their own mix and have the ability to do some stero panning as well. Sorry for the long response but hope it helps.

This is actually something that I have been thinking about doing as well... It really is a pain to haul a 6-space rack and a huge 90lb. 4x10 to church every Sunday in my dinky Corolla. My concern would be that some members of the congregation, or my pastor for that matter, might wonder why I have headphones on, which might mess with praise. Have you or anyone else run into that problem?

Well, I can say that the In-Ear thing is not for everyone. The mix is great and I can hear 1000% better during worship. But they do isolate your hearing and block all outside sound so that your "mix" is not effected. Everyone on our team including the praise leader uses them except the piano player. She felt that she was "detached" from the service cause she could not hear the congregation singing or praising. The rest of us feel more in tune with everything because were not fighting our mix the whole time, plus we set up some small condenser mics on the crowed to blend in a little "crowed noise" into our in-ear mix. But as far as the cosmetic aspect, no, the in-ear monitors do not mess with praise. Our Pastor loves the fact that the sound on stage is more controlled as we gotten rid of about 5 floor wedges!

Check out this thread: In-Ear monitoring on the cheap - my successful experiment

Here a working bassist uses high-quality, yet inexpensive, in-ear headphones for monitoring. Looks like just what the doctor ordered. I think I'm going to put these on my Christmas list.
