Question EB Volume JR Question

My drummer just came over to my apartment and gave me my Christmas present: an EB volume jr which i was quite excited for, until i started playing with it. I'm sure most of you are familiar with this pedal and that it has a string/pulley system inside to turn the potentiometer . Well whenever I rock the pedal slowly it functions fine, however if i do so at even a medium speed the string slides around the potentiometer instead of turning it and the pedal does nothing, or only swells to half volume or something. Is that a known condition of having a pulley system like this? Or do i have myself a faulty pedal? I couldn't find any info out in the internet, and i can't think of a better group of people to ask

Sure seems defective. I've been using an Ernie Ball volume pedal for over 20 years and I've never had the string slip on the pot shaft.
