EBS MD vs Tech 21 bass character

Sign in to disble this ad
I want something to add to my tone. Tone I love is soft overdrive from old tube amps. There are two effects on craiglist, EBS multidrive for 70eur and Tech 21 VT bass character for 90eur. Which will get me better tube - vintage like soft OD?

The VT is preety much an "svt in a stompbox", while the multidrive is a distortion box. If you`re after a slight crunch, the VT will get you there no problem, the multidrive is a good pedal but does not do "slight" distortion very well - in my opinion the valvedrive is their answer to that.

Ime, I found the vt to be too clicky for me.
I sold my vt, but I still have my md (assuming you mean multidrive)
I think that says it for me !

I would love to have the valvedrive but it's way too expensive for me xD

I really want just a bit of enchantment so I'll probably go for tech 21 VT (or maybe Blonde, I heard it's good for bass too)

I can vouch for the Blonde. I've got a Fender Bassman TV Duo Ten and I use the Blonde as a crunch channel or when I have to play through supplied backline. It takes a fair bit of knob twiddling to get a light overdrive but you will get there.

I have used both (VT and MultiDrive) and could get a great sound out of both.
The VT has a lot more "character" while the EBS let's your original bass sound come through very well. But that's not a surprised considering what these units were designed for.

Too bad I can't try them because it looks like both can make the sound I'm looking for
This is one hard decision

Hmm... I re-read your original post... I guess for "vintage" and "soft" sounds I'd try the VT first. The EQ of the VT can push it a lot more in that direction.

VT absolutely = soft. Ok it can do punky and clangy as well, but few things do 'soft' as well as the VT.

I see you already found my rather crappy-sounding youtube video! Listening back to it again, I can see that it would be no help... tempted to delete it!

But from playing with them both, I'd go for the VT Bass all the way. FWIR the Blonde can do one decent bass sound, but the VT can do that same sound better and many more besides. Sorry that the video doesn't really capture that!

Someone described the VT bass as sounding "like a tennis ball" (soft and slightly furry) - that's exactly right IMO!
