EBS Metal Drive

Just read the first review posted on the EBS website on their new MetalDrive pedal. Seems like a killer! Anyone who have tried it? Here's the review:

I'm also very interested in this pedal. I'd like it to be compared to Rats and Tech 21 XXL Bass Edition. I have a great time every day I use my ebs bassiq, and hope this new one is also great.

Hi
I just picked up both the Metaldrive and the new Phaser.
The Metaldrive starts where the Multidrive ends. It's tonality is somewhat reminiscent of the Boss ODB-3, but without all the hiss and noise. However it tends to add more to the sound and enhance it far more than just colour it like the Boss. Actually I find the Boss, if pushed, just walks all over the original sound, The Metaldrive does not.
Before trying it I sound checked the Way Cool Pickle, which I found to lose far too much of the bottom end when pushed, great sounds mind you, just muddy in the deeps if you know what I mean. I tried a dual Rat as well, same problem, great sounds just not scoped out for bass.
The Phaser is interesting and has a good combination of settings and is a very tasty pedal if used in the right circumstances. The LED is really quite bright, shockingly so in fact and unless I miss my guess waxes and wanes with the sweep selected. At first I thought it was malfunctioning until I noticed it followed the sweeps pattern. At least that's what I hope it's doing.
As for battery life, can't tell you I always run adapters, and the Boss does well here.
As for construction they're extremely tight tolerances when you're trying to get the backing plate off. Makes it beer proof I'm sure. They're oh so slightly smaller than their original stablemates so the use of the Planet Waves straight jacks are out between it and the older generation.
All I can say is try one, and I'll probably be posting a couple of ODB-3s for sale sometime in the near future.
Hope this helps

Just got one, first impressions very positive. Better than most I've tried, with a nice modern edge. Don't understand why there's not more love around for this...

I swear sometime I'm going to buy one of these. Keep on pushing it down my GAS list for other hard to find boutiques. I've been using a MultiDrive for the last 3 years. It is my favorite overdrive amonst all the other dirt pedals I've tried. The MultiDrive is only used with the gain above noon and sometimes I wish for even more gain so the MetalDrive would probably be a worthy upgrade.

Would love to hear more opinions/hype about the MetalDrive.

For those who have had both Multi & Metal Drives; how much overlap is there in the gain knob? Can the MetalDrive do gentle OD sounds like the MultiDrive? Or is it always fullbore brain melting distortion the whole way through the gain spectrum?

I'd also be interested in first-hand experience comparing the multi and metal... I wasn't very impressed with the OD on the MicroBass, which was rather buzzy and midrangey.

The Metal Drive does a fairly decent 'greasy clean' sound with the gain down, and does a good job of 'cleaning up', i.e. you can use your volume knob to control the level of distortion without changing the volume too much. (This with my P copy).

The only bad point on the metal drive is the seeming pointlessness of the 'flat' mode, at least when the pedal is used on its own.

I know this post was ages ago, but coincidentally I got the Metal Drive and an XXL bass on the same day, so...

I'd say the XXL bass is a more typical, od-distortion type affair, and the gain range starts higher than the metal drive (The XXL is a bit more like the boss ODB3 in that respect, going from 'high gain' to 'insane'.) So not a bad pedal, but to me the metaldrive is a bit more interesting, and closer to the 'grindy' sound that seems to get love around here these days.

Incidentally I (respectfully!) don't agree with the above post that the metaldrive is like the ODB-3 - The metaldrive sound is a lot more interesting and better controlled IMO, no comparison there.

Rats just lose way too much bottom end to be compared to either of these IMO.

I did a shoot out between the Metal drive, the Multi drive and the Valve Drive.

The Metal drive is a fantastic pedal. Thick Fuzz with tons of low end. It will suit many player's dirt needs. About the only way it could be better would be with an adjustable gate. (not for noise, but for MUSE style percolating lines.) But even without the gate the pedal is very dynamic and expressive.

The Name is misleading. They should have called it a Fuzz Drive. My 2 cents CDN

I had one for a couple of days and found it either sounded...crappy or didn't have much bass left. I can do that (with more bass left!) with my rat too. So back it went.

Presumably 'didn't have much bass left' was experienced on the 'flat' mode? (which certainly doesn't have much bass left, hence my previous allusions to its apparent pointlessness)

No...the other modes also cut lots of bass (though obviously less than flat mode).

I don't feel like I'm losing anything either on the...ahem... 'STD' mode, or flat mode, and I'm pretty fussy about low end loss (I play either 5er's, or a 4 tuned BEAD)...

Admittedly I've only played it through headphones - Beyer DT 311 - which are bassy enough but probably not as bassy as a really good set of full-range monitors... but still...

Basically, MMDV!
