EBS multi comp- hissing like crazy

Sign in to disble this ad
I usually have both compression and gain turned to about 12 o'clock- is hissing normal?

I'm playing with an audere 9 volt and I have the pedal switched to accomodate for that, but have other people experienced an inordinate amount of hissing with this setting?

I don't hear any hiss to speak of from my Multicomp. Have you isolated the hiss to the Multicomp, checking the power supply/battery, cable, bass, possible interference from lighting or PC monitors, other electrical equipment?

Turning up the gain will of course amplify any noise you get through the pickups, but something is definately wrong if it is hissing like crazy.

My multi-comp is dead quiet, even using my active bass with the switch on.

Not sure if this is your issue, but open it up and make sure your individual trim pots (hi and low) aren't turned to some extreme settings.

Give bongomania a shout too, if needed.

Trim pots shouldn't contribute to any excessive noise. I've got the hi-trim cranked, and the low-trim in the middle. Tried the low on full, as well as both on minimum. No noise.

I have the same problem with mine (I have the old version, what's yours?) It doesn't seem to like being used with other effects pedals, I guess. Used seperately, it's pretty quiet but together with my Zoom B2.1u it has become a noise machine recently, especially when used with my amp's passive channel. It's pretty annoying.

By the way, it also hisses with the gain all the way off, I almost never use the gain knob.

You are all wrong the EBS Multi comp is at unity gain with the gain all the way off so anything above that is boosted and that is the cause of your hiss

+1. People need to RTFM.

Additionally, i have found that my Multicomp is not compatible with all other equipment. One of my preamps (a high-end transformer-based pre/DI) has an internally floating ground, which is intended to reduce ground loops, but which makes the EBS hiss like crazy. Using other preamps I get no hiss. So see if you can try your EBS with a different rig, and if the hiss goes away then you will have an idea of where to look for possible grounding issues.

Oh duh! I guess that's the reason my Multicomp doesn't like my Zoom B2.1u, I'll try fiddling with its ground lift switch, maybe that'll help. Thanks for the tip, bongomania!

the ground lift switch only affects the DI output.
