EBS Multicomp Correction...

Sign in to disble this ad
So a while back when I first got my EBS Multicomp I sent out a few PMs and posted in a few threads complaining that the G string on my fretless was clipping the compressor in multiband mode.

Listening now to the bass again more closely through headphones, with and without the compressor, I realized I was mistaken. In fact this bass's pickups (Dimarzio model J) are *so* hot combined low action I have that the output is already distorting - straight from the output jack on the bass.

The reason I only noticed this with the compressor on at first was because of the way the multi-band mode tends to bring out highs on a bass with naturally big lows.

Lowering the instrument volume removes the distortion and I get my "mwah" back on those high notes rather than the distorted sound I was getting. Now however I find that with the volume down the output level is no longer large enough to trigger the compressor- so I'm back to having that string being so much louder than the others. I wish there was a way to reduce it's volume without raising the strings...

So in conclusion, the Multi-band mode on the EBS in fact *doesn't* "clip" easier than the other modes. And actually its become my favorite of the 3 settings for playing with a pick on my fretted bass - it keeps things more even while simultaneously making it sound less muddy due to the 2 band compression.

Would it be possible to bring the end of your pickups nearest the G string down on your bass? It might be worth a shot.

Definitely try dropping your PU, and while you're at it, drop a brand new battery in your bass. A weak battery could cause unwanted clipping.
