EBS MultiComp settings with J-Bass with flatwounds?

Sign in to disble this ad
Hey guys,

I just recently switched my strings to flatwounds on my Fender Jazz, and I'm digging the sound - but I'm not sure if the settings on my MultiComp are working as well as they did with rounds.

I have it set with the compression at 12:30 and the output at 7:00 (Tube-Sim mode - Bongo's suggestion ). I was just wondering if anybody else uses other settings with flats on their J-Bass, so I can maybe try some stuff out.

To explain how I'm feeling right now, switching to flats definitely gives me the smooth motown sound that i like, but I feel that it just doesn't have the sustain it could...maybe the pedal has nothing to do with it, maybe i have to wait for the strings to get nice and used. I don't know, this is my first time using flats - but I thought I'd ask around and see how other people have their stuff set up!

Here: P-bass with flats, MutiComp Tube sim mode, compression 12:00 gain 9:00.
So almost same as yours. But if you have flats the first time you have to get used to a shorter sustain then rounds.
Heck, in the Motown times they even damped the strings with a foam at the bridge so you could not talk about sustain at all!!

Or if you really want to make the sustain longer, look for maybe another compressor, there are a better compresors for this task than Multicomp.

Yeah, the EBS is great, but not for adding sustain. You'd want something with a higher ratio for that. Also flats are not generally as "sustain-y" as rounds.

On my Peavey Grind NTB 5 w/ TI Jazz Flats and EMG 40J's I run my MultiComp in Multiband mode with gain about 10:00, Compression maxxed, and the internal trimmers set fully clockwise for the highs and 2:00 for the lows. Gets a really fat sound.

Cool, thanks for the info guys. I know it'll take a while to get used to the sound of flats - I absolutely love them, I was just curious as to whether a setting on the compression was adding to the dampening. I love the settings now though, so I'll keep 'em.

Also, the flats have been on a week, so they're gonna need to settle in. And I'm just trying to get used to it - new amp settings, new neck tension and string height and all that...but playing in a country/rock/r&b band, it sounds really good - and definitely puts my sound on a whole other plane from the guitars and drums, while still fitting in with the band.

Anyway, thanks for the input guys! Rock on.
