EBS Multicomp: whats the bottom line?

Sign in to disble this ad
I've read alot about this little guy around the boards and I'm just wondering one thing... what exactly does it do that makes it so stunning?

I understand that it is basically a bass specific compressor but can you folks break it down for me in terms of what the modes do to the signal? And more importantly, in what ways it is so much more preferable to the competition that sits below it in price?

thanks!

The normal mode is a clean single-band compressor. Mostly transparent and neutral in tone and action.

The "tubesim" mode is just like the normal mode, except the signal is softly distorted (not in a buzzy way, but a warming way) to emulate a mellow tube preamp.

The multi-band mode is transparent like the normal mode, except your signal is split into highs and lows, and each band is compressed separately, and then recombined at the output. Check the FAQ linked in my sig for a detailed explanation of single-band vs. multiband compression.

What makes it "better than average" for bass, compared to many others, is that the fixed attack and release settings happen to work well for a good percentage of bassists (but not everyone of course). Also it does not lose any low end, as many other pedal comps do.

This is one of the best and easiest to use pedals. You set it and forget it. I'm a slapper and being up to keep it on and not have to touch it during fingerstyle playing makes it a keeper. I'm a big fan of compression (when used correctly). I'm not a sloppy player and could do without and still sound great. Some of my favorite compressors are:

1.EBS multi-comp
2.Demeter compulator (warmer, and more noticeable in the signal chain.. sometimes that's good)
3.Symetrix 501 sounds REALLY GOOD thru the effects loop of my DB680

For me the EBS and symetrix are great for fitting into your sound and not dominiating it
