EBS Unichorus - noisy or quiet?

Sign in to disble this ad
I've been reading reviews on this and getting very mixed results on the sound quality. Half the reviewers say that it's dead quiet, no noise. The other half say that it has terrible hiss and is un-useable in the studio and almost un-useable live because of this. Does anyone know what's up? Did they have a manufacturing problem for awhile?

There are too many people on both sides of the fence to ignore. They can't all be wrong - just looking for an explanation.

Well I'm definitely on the "dead quiet" side of the fence, and I've had all sorts of other pedals chained in front of it.

The only things I can think of (since I don't think EBS has ever had a quality control issue) is inexperienced users cranking the depth and rate which may add swooshy white noise which I think all chorus pedals do (although my UniChorus didn't ... since sold but NOT because of a noise issue) ...

OR they have a noisy pedal in front of the UniChorus. One thing I noticed with mine, and other have mentioned it too, is there is a volume boost (apparently can be adjusted by an internal trim pot) when engaging the pedal. Personally, I like that aspect of it. But if there was a noisy pedal in front of the Unichorus, it may accentuate the noise but is not the cause.

I'm guessing obviously... if you're considering the UniChorus and not sure because of a noise issue though, I really don't think it should be a concern.

The interesting thing is that a number of the negative reviewers sounded like they were very knowledgeable and had plenty of experience with pedals. The only things I can think of is that the pedal behaves differently with the current overseas (some were European users) or that it behaves differently in an effects send/return as opposed to going before plugging into the amp. I've read where an effects loop is not a good way to do chorus effects.
