Effect/Advice for the Tic Tac bass sound?

Sign in to disble this ad
I've got a Patsy Cline tribute band developing with some good friends, and the vocalist has it nailed. While the backup band will be a stripped down 3 or 4 piece to start, I was just wondering...is there something I can do to get that tic tac bass sound? Possibly an effect, octaver, foam mute close to the bridge, pick required, whatever? I'm a two finger plucker playing SX shortscales, 57 P copy and 62 J copy. Haven't started experimenting yet. Any advice, suggestions, or if someone has already worked this out, many thanks. Couldn't find anything searching on tick tack, tic tac, Patsy Cline, or Owen Bradley. The sound is obvious listening to Patsy's recordings. Other research indicates the standup bass was doubled an octave up with a Danelectro six string bass/baritone guitar. If there is a way now one guy can do it, I'd really like to know. A little help? Thanks.

A pick would be a good start. I would think picking closer to the bridge would help witht the tone your looking for aswell.

Pick, and EQ emphasizing the highs, de-emphasizing the low mids, would get you at least partway there. There are a number of octave-up pedals out there- most of them have a distorted tone to the octave-up, but then a lot of old-school country guitar was pretty distorted. So if you run the octave-up to a small guitar amp, and the carefully-EQ'ed bass to your bass amp, you should get to the finish line. If carrying two amps is too much, then you can get similar results using a "blender" pedal to mix the octave and bass signals. And then again, many octavers include that blend function already.

Get a 6-string baritone/bass like a Danelectro or Fender Bass VI. Instant Tic Tac. The newer Dano's are relatively cheap on ebay. I think Eastwood makes one too.
