Talking The Effect Builders Club!

Sign in to disble this ad
Hey guys! Just wanted to start a thread for all of us who build FX or want to start! Show us your home made effects, mods, ideas! Also throw out questions and we can help!!!!

Right now I am working on a Phase Shifter that has a switch which you can control the parameters via photo sensors!

So I ran into an issue. I am a EE major, but we haven't gotten to OP Amps yet. I am trying to create a buffer(instead of using Transistors). I wire it with the input in the non-inverting input with a feedback-loop and a 10K ohm resistor. Yet, my signal does not come through. Any ideas?

I build the odd effect and circuit bend kids toys. Im a Telecommunications Engineer by trade, but am reading some good material in regard to electronics recommended to me by our very own Niftydog and some other EE guys I work with.

Its certainly interesting stuff and im getting my head around it slowly, but im a long way from 'talking the talk'

Hopefully we can get some good discussion going in this thread though!

Hm. I'd be interested in this. I'm trying to figure out what I'd need to change to make the Wah Wah over at tonepad.com into a bass wah. It would be my first FX project...

Subscribed.

Thanks guys! This is looking good.

As for Bass wahing, I'm not exactly sure how to do this. I mean, in theory one would emphasize that bass and middle ranges. I would assume some sort of band pass or gyrator to make an EQ. Any tips?

Reading your previous posts, you seem to know quite a bit. We would love your input!

Well, frankly I think there's other forums for this type of thing, like diystompboxes, but I'm not opposed to some basic discussion. But, in order for this to be productive we need to be able to post basic schematics, so I propose that we all go and download ASCII Circuit and learn how to use the code tags so we can post stuff like this - a basic NPN emitter follower as found in many pedals:
Code:
                 V+

                 |
    ||         |/
   -||-o-o---o-|
    ||   |     |>      ||
        .-.      o-----||- output
        | |      |     ||
    510k| |     .-.
        '-'     | |
         |      | |10k
       V+/2     '-'
                 |
                 |
                ===
                GND
Now, B.C., post up an ASCII sketch and we'll try to help you.

Ok, its kinda late here, so I'll do it in the A.M. Thats a really good idea. Something I was going to do was just scan my schematics, but this works to.

If anybody has any pictures/soundclips, post em!

I have looked at that Wah before. I believe I saw somewhere that you need to replace the 470 ohm resistor with a lower value resistor to increase gain / bass response. You might need to experiment with a few as it will distort with too low a resistance.

EDIT: This is where I think I saw that originally. It has a few wah mods that I think would apply to the tonepad one too.
2nd EDIT: Had a closer look at the tonepad one again. The resistors etc are just like in the webpage I supplied. The 470 ohm is on the emitter of the Q1 tranny and so on. I think you should be right following the points on the website. I haven't built a wah as yet though, so im only going off memory and reading.

Good luck

KarateKid25 (or niftydog), what are some of the recommended reading materials you mentioned? I need to get on the ball and get back to working on my 'Dust Bunny' bass fuzz pedal I told you about the other day.

'Linear Integrated Circuits' by Winzer & 'The Art Of Electronics' by Horowitz & Hill where the ones nifty recommended to me. Also im reading 'Electronic Devices & Circuit Theory' By Boylestad and Nashelsky & 'Intro Circuit Analysis' by Boylestad. They where given to me by an EE at work.

Also many a web page. Then there is the practical side of building kits etc and cloning. I try not to just build, but ask 'why'?

Great idea. Most of the other diy sites aren't bass oriented-so this is good!

Keep in mind that there will be folks reading these posts of varying levels of interest/ability, from enthusiasts to engineers. Maybe we could start with a list of essential reading to get us newbies up to spec.

+1, these are great books. I also have a book, "Analog Signal Processing" for buffers and pass filters.

Sure! What do you want to do? The best is to start with something completely analog and easy to build, such as an overdrive circuit. Look up the schematics for the fuzz face, its an easy build.

I would also reccomend picking up some EE books to learn what the components do. You will run across a lot of math, but they usually give you what you need to know about the components.

Sorry, for some reason, it doesn't want to copy completely. Heres the idea though. This should act as a nice buffer correct?

Code:

                                             ___
                |                   .-------|___|-o
               / \                  |             |
              ( ~ )                 |             |
               \_/                  |     |\|     |
                |                   '-----|-\     |
                |                         |  >----o-------
                '-------------------------|+/
                                          |/|
