Effect that go with certain styles of music

I've been struggling with buying effects pedals. I mainly play Alternative Pop type music and it would be great if some of you could define what Main types of effects pedals would suit different styles of music. If someone can give me a rough over view of what pedals work well with types of music styles it might help. I currently own a compression and a Sansamp deluxe. I did purchase a multi effects pedal that I found to be very "Toy" like and the effects to be too digital and cheesy for my taste.

you want stuff for alt pop? From what I hear on the radio i'd say compression, od/distortion/fuzz, playing with a pick, and your about there.

Ya I was looking at a Fuzz pedal and worried it would be a one trick pony type effect.
