Effect order anyone?

Sign in to disble this ad
I've sorta been wondering wheter there was a specific line you had to put up your pedals in order for them to work best. I've read a few threads on TB where someone recommends changing the pedal order to get the best sound, but what order would you guys recommend for my stompbox collection:

a 7band EQ, a distortion, a synthesizer, a limitier/enhancer and multi fx stompbox?
Some help or tips would be greatly appreciated

I don't know about best, but...

This is the way I do mine:

Bass---> Boss Tu-2 ---> Dunlop Bass Wah ---> Zoom B1x Multi-FX ---> Boss LM-2B Bass Limiter---> Sansamp BDDI

The missing link for me was the placement of the limiter. Putting after your multi fx seems like a good idea. Experimentation is required. Have fun.

Your order should be strictly for you. I really cannot figure out threads asking about this. Spend an hour or two and figure it out. You will be satisfied with yourself when you have something you like. I've never used a limiter or synth box so I cant give you suggestions on the entire setup.

However, the EQ, if you must use it...
Do you switch between pick and finger style and/or slap? Maybe you can put it in the beginning of the chain to be a quick EQ separation when you switch between playing styles. Does your try boosting certain frequencies to really accent your distortion box. Try boosting certain frequencies you tend to use in your synth box and stick it in front of it.

Overall, try to think how the pedals interact with each other and lay them in order so they all work well together.

With only five pedals it can't be too difficult to try different combinations.

I'd start with either the multi (assuming it has an octaver, which will need a clean signal to track well) or the "synth" (whatever it is) first, then limiter (to tame the peaks from the resonant filters in the two pedals before, assuming they have filters), then distortion, then EQ.

Some people like distortion earlier in the chain, but I prefer to distort stuff later, so the distortion doesn't get neutered by other effects.

The one thing I will add to what has already been said, is try putting the tuner at the very end of your chain so it acts as an instant mute.

Yeah I do switch between the three styles while playing, but the thing I'm wondering is wheter the, say distortion, while sorta overrule the compressor if put before it?

Mine right now is:

J-bass --> PlanetWaves tuner --> Moog MF-101 (ordering tomorrow ) --> EHX microPOG --> Electronix Messdrive --> DOD FX72 --> Amp

I always assumed comps were at the end of a chain or after an OD/fuzz. Oh well.
