Effect rookie's question

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi all.My question is this:Is it safe to run 2 effects (chorus and fuzz) from 1 9v 300ma wall wart with modifications,or would I be better using 1 per effect?Thanx.

if each of those effects are 9volts (which i assume they are) and you are running them series, which i think you would have to, then each effect will only get 4.5 volts, and not work. if you ran them parallel you would probably burn out your ac adapter. you are probably better off using two wall warts, modifying power supplies can be tricky/dangerous business.

Parallel would not at all burn out the AC adapter unless it was unregulated and there was some issue with the connection to a specific unit (for example with a polarity mismatch- see syciprider's thread about that sort of difficulty). What you need to do is figure out the amperage draw of each pedal. Add them together, and if that number is less than the 300mA provided by that wall wart, and if both pedals take the same polarity, you're fine.

Most fuzz pedals draw very little current (under 50mA, usually), and chorus pedals tend not to draw much either.

Unless they're digital pedals, you should be fine. Regardless, I'd double-check their current draw ratings.

Also... if you tell us what you've got, we can easily tell you if a 300mA adapter will provide enough power for both.

Even if it doesn't... there's a whole world of power supplies out there for effects pedals to meet your needs. Just search the forum for a bit and you'll see what I mean!

Yeah. You should be able to power all three, actually.

Oh, BTW, don't actually modify the wall wart itself. Use a daisy-chain cable with it. The big power supply makers (Visual Sound, Godlyke, Diago, etc.) make them.

Heck, you could even get one of their high-capacity supplies while you're at it.
