Effects to Gallien Kruegar 1001 RB II Amp

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi there,

Excuse my ignorance here but this is all new to me and the following question may be a stupid one, nevertheless here it is anyway because I don't understand.

I have set up a pedalboard and my understanding is that the last lead runs from the last effects output to the amp. As the title of this thread indicates I have a GK 1001 RB II amp, but I don't know where to connect the lead.

Is it to the 'Input' socket, is it to the 'FX Out' socket, what is the 'FX Return' for? I've looked in the GK manual and done a quick search on here and still non the wiser.

Any help really appreciated.

Kind Regards,

BH12neil

You usually want to use the regular input on the 1001 this way you can utilize the preamp section on the amp.
If you go to the effects return you will bypass the preamp section and this is usually not a desirable thing.

Thanks very much for your help, the regular input it is then. Out of interest what are the FX out and return for then?

If you wanted to you could plug your bass directly into the input and then connect your effects between fx out and fx return. Make sure your effects' output goes to the fx return socket. And that'll give you a post preamp option for the effects. It might sound a little different than going into the input with the effects. So experiment.
You could also add some effects to the fx loop and have some at the input stage.

Recently I put my Catalinbread SFT overdrive into the effects loop of this very amp. I was going to ask my fellow bassists if this would be a bad idea or not, but I went ahead and did it without asking. It worked fine for a few weeks. I liked the way that I had more control between the SFT (overdrive) and my Marshall distortion pedal, which was in the input. However, just the other day, the sound (volume) started getting really quiet as I played. I put the SFT back into the input where I originally had it. Everything sounds fine and I haven't attempted to put anything else in the loop since then. But I'm curious about what's going on with the loop.

Someone scold me (if needed). And then everyone else learn from it. Cheers, J
