Anytime I've shown up to gig with a board, it takes me about 3 songs to realize that it's purely self enduldgent and more of a distraction than anything else, but again, that's just for me. I know Justin and Juan have made quite a name for themselves on the diametric opposite. I've played almost every Chris Thomlin song at church. Thanks for sharing. |

If it sounds good it is good. |

I always appreciate the "purist" as we'll as the "saturated". Thank goodness for both. I always take something away. Like this. Now I want a 1969 Ampeg! Quote:

I'm really tired of hearing that we should all play Fenders and Ampegs. Yeah that's not a bad sound but it's not necessarily a sound that works for everyone. Try telling people like Jon Davis, Jaun Alderte, Justin Chancellor, Bootsy Collins, etc, etc that all they need is a bass, tuner, and amp. |

You need to listen first, then ask yourself two basic questions: 1.) Can anyone actually hear what I am doing at this moment? 2.) Does it serve the emotion or tone of the song? I play a lot of Tomlin songs as well, and if the answer to both of those questions is yes, I employ my effects tastefully. It really all depends on how many other instruments are in the band, and what will actually get through to the audience. There is nothing wrong with effects, and I don't agree that they are purely self satisfying and indulgent. They are simply spices to be added when the dish calls for it.

| | | | Effects are awesome.
Playing clean is awesome.
There is room to do both - often, even within a single piece of music.
