....I've been thinking about this for a while and i wonder what to call our collective obsession with the pretty shiny little things so many of us have. Over and above the effects we regularly use at various gigs on pedal board(s) many of us have extended collections of other pedals we hoar...emm hold on to for various reasons. Some are because they are special or have sentimental reasons, some expensive or rare while others are common. My usual excuse is for the "studio collection" I mean don't ever see myself using a Big Muff, Rat, Talkbox or other collectibles on any gig but they remain in the do not sell or trade list despite their value on the open market. OTOH I did recently sell a NE1 that was on the "permanent keep" list as it was bumped by something much better.

I sell everything I don't use, but wish I could keep all the ones I liked, which is almost all of them.

So, though I don't collect, I can totally relate to the concept. Its nice to have a sound around you may use someday. Like a painter who keeps color palettes handy she may never use yet still finds interesting, just in case...

I alternately save/hoard pedals that I imagine I might use one day or sell ones that are a bit dusty, and instantly regret it(for semi-legit reasons, not just *Oh, I wish I had that one back* BS). As for a name for this behavior- I dunno- OCUWPHD/Obesessive Compulsive Unneccesary Pedal Hoarding Disorder? Pronounced *awk-you-ft*

I must have 25 or 30 and use none. Only a VT deluxe or sans amp deluxe when there is a backline and it sucks....

I'm not so much a hoarder as a compulsive buy/sell/trader with a large amount of seller's remorse for certain effects that I no longer own. Pretty much the same thing I am sure, only after the fact.

If only I had skills to match the gear.

I have some pedals that left the gigging PB + a Korg G5 which is too big to fit on a board (not to mention the plastic won't surely hold in gigging situations).

that being said, I've just bought a Deep Impact and planning to gig with it.

I tend to keep lesser pedals (*) as well, mostly becasue you never know when an A-lister breaks or if I ever decide to get a second board.

(*) meaning pedals that were on my board for a while but got replaced with something I currently like more. I do realize it's a question of taste which can change over time. eg. I had a CE-2b which broke, replaced it with a CE-5 which I don't really like which got then replaced by a CEB-3. I'm keeping the CE-5 because 'you never know'..

After seeing Billy Corgan's collection, I don't think any amount of "hoarding" I'll ever do will compare.

I would LOVE to hoard all of my effects pedals that I've purchased. So tired of having to sell them to get new pedals, but alas...no monies. If I don't sell the pedals, how will I try new ones??? Damn it! If someone figures this one out for me...you know...how to make more money for pedals...let me know.

My collection began as a result of my own varied musical tastes versus the demands of the band. For the band everything had to be kept simple to stay loud and clear. Many awesome effects would get buried in the mix or muddy up the low end. I couldn't bare to seperate with these pedals so they were set aside until gradually a second board formed. Lots of buying, selling, and trading happened to perfect the sounds on each board. Always improving the quality, functionality, and versitility of the pedals selected for the "theme" of each board. Three years later and both boards are near perfect dream boards.
During this process some extra pedals were set aside as runners up, second place backups, some just too cool to pass on. Sometimes these pedals are swapped out with my mainline pedals when the mood strikes. I still really like them and see them setting in my pedal pile begging to be played again.
I foresee a third pedalboard in my near future. An assembly of secondstring benchwarmers brought together to rockout again. And when that happens I will have another board to swap out pedals, and maybe another board will be born from the remains of the third.

Will it ever end?
So many awesome pedals I haven't even tried yet! Pedal flipping will last as long as the cash does.

I'm not sure it will ever end for me. The grass is always greener... For what ever reason I just can't seem to sell anything yet. I REALLY need to work on that, until then I'm just hoarding.

I only have a few pedals not on my board. Ones an LS-2 which I know will be handy to have and I'll be glad I hung onto it at some point in time (I had two,...sold one).

The other pedals that I have that aren't on my board are in need of repairs,...after I fix em,...I may use them,...or I may move them along.

I fall into the obsessive buy/trade/sell category of this disease. I don't collect, I'm too pragmatic for THAT.

Despite my setup I do like to think of myself as a minimalist when it comes to material things.
